they seem to be cracking down on street campers and leaving signs saying "there are shelters to go to"... when i was on the streets here not long ago that was not really true. under the burnside bridge they let a small group of street punks ruin it for a lot of people who depend on that group setting for a secure place to sleep at night.
of course they only focus on those dirty select few who act like asses and cause trouble... but where does that leave the quiet majority in the back who sleep under the burnside bridge because it is well lit and - if you've ever slept outside you'd know this one- people sleep in group settings because it gives a sense of security so they can actually get some sleep at night. it also gives a sense of community and turns a potential nightmare into something that can be handled.
furthermore in case you have not noticed, street peeps give portland it's vibe- they give a piece of soul to a town in need of one. you don't believe me go to other big towns and observe; the way towns treat their homeless has a large affect on the sense of community for everyone.
even if you don't like homeless people and even if they do have their faults, they know how to live with each other instead of next to each other (something we've forgot) and thats good for all of us.
I have no idea where what criminal go tthe idea to post a sign saying there are shelters to go to- portland does not have sufficient shelters to hold all these people. you can't even get a place to store your bag to go to get work for the day (unlike other towns). resources are there such as food etc, but shelter is something else. TPI and UGM don't help with that even though they have the building space and funding. the only place is the rescue mission and they can't do it all alone.
