Coalition Building event at PSU

Coalition Building: Organizing at the Intersections Thursday March 20, 7pm Portland State University SMSU Room 236 Free and open to the public
Event Description Dylan Powell, an animal liberation and migrant justice activist from St. Catherine's, Ontario will be presenting a workshop on the ins and outs of coalition building and intersectional organizing. What is coalition building? What is intersectionality? How do animal and environmental activists build necessary bridges with other communities, organizations, and movements? How do we work towards solidarity without appropriating the experiences and struggles of other communities? When is intersectional organizing appropriate? How do we effectively organize across movements? Why do animal and ecological movements need to approach our goals with intersectionality in mind? He will discuss these topics and more as they explore how our movement can move beyond its current stagnation and isolation by adopting an intersectional approach, cross-movement solidarity, and coalition building skills. This workshop focuses on strategies for coalition building from an ally perspective within the animal/earth advocacy movements. Specific focus is paid to sameness/difference, diversity of scale/tactics, and a critique of consumerism. Dylan Powell is an organizer in St. Catharines, Ont. Co-Founder of Marineland Animal Defense, #OurScars and the Live Free Collective, Dylan is active in the animal and earth liberation movements, as well as involved in solidarity organizing with the Haudenosaunee of the Grand River, the migrant justice advocacy community and at risk youth in the Niagara Region. Dylan is graduate of Brock University (Honours History) and current Addiction Education student at McMaster University in Hamilton. Through advocacy work Dylan has lectured and spoken across North America and been featured in International news media outlets.
