Ancient Forest Alert: The Good, Bad, and Ugly.
Eco Advocates Action Alert for Oregon's Last Ancient Forests
(Please take action and forward to friends & neighbors.)
HEADLINES. (Read Below the headlines for links and specific details.)
* The Ugly: "Logging without Laws" legislation added onto the Farm Bill at last minute. Section 8204. Cutting food stamps by $800 million per year but giving big timber and forest biomass extraction industries $200 million per year. Sound equitable to you?
* The Bad: Senator Wyden's Logging and Biomass Extraction Legislation (S. 1301 & S. 1784). Two Bills Threaten 10 Million acres of Oregon's Last Ancient Forests on Public Lands.
* The Good: Eco Advocates NW sponsored a Freeway Billboard exposing Senator Wyden's Clear-Cut Solution for BLM O & C Lands starting in November through December 2013. See it at http://eco-advocates.org
* The Good: NW and National environmental groups including the Sierra Club have publicly announced opposition to Senator Wyden's Western Oregon's O & C Land Grant Act (S. 1784).
* The Good: Cascadia Forest Defenders has implemented a Citizen's Injunction via a tree-sit occupation in a Roseburg BLM timber sale. It is a Norm Johnson and Jerry Franklin Pilot Project called White Castle that Senator Wyden is touting as a model for Senate Bill 1784. Subsequently two Oregon groups filed a lawsuit against the sale. http://forestdefensenow.com
*The Bad: Oregon Democrats especially King Kitzhaber is leading the way to suspend and avoid compliance with environmental laws including the Endangered Species Act on the 93,000 acre Elliott State Forest.
The Solution: Oregon's last ancient forests need your voice to help fend off these attacks by the Democratic Party!
The Ugly: "Logging without Laws" legislation added onto the Farm Bill at last minute. Section 8204.
Section 8204 added to the current Farm Bill on January 29, 2014 is a legislative rider that seeks to log and extract biomass from virtually every unprotected acre of national forest in the western U.S..
Section 8204 of the Farm Bill would in essence place an Orwellian named "Healthy Forest Restoration Act" law enacted in 2003 by the Bush Administration and co-written by Senator Wyden on steroids for the next 10 years. Environmental laws would be suspended and projects up to 3,000 acres each could be implemented across the west for at least a decade into the future. "$200,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2014 through 2024" from Subsection ''(f) AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS". OK. Cut food stamps but give $200 million a year away to fund big timber and biomass extraction.
Our only solution is to demand the Democratic Party remove this provision or face the wrath of environmental voters this spring, fall and beyond.
The Bad: Senator Wyden's Logging and Biomass Extraction Legislation Threatens 10 Million acres of Public Forests
Democratic U. S. Senator Wyden has proposed two terribly destructive bills that seek to suspend environmental laws to increase logging and biomass extraction upon about 11 million acres of Oregon's last ancient forests on federal public lands.
Senator Wyden's (Orwellian) Oregon's Eastside Forests Restoration, Forest Health and Jobs Act , (S. 1301) which is now in the full Senate would seek to log and extract forest biomass in the guise of creating a healthier forest. To pay for such chainsaw "restoration" trees inside ancient forest up 200 years old could be cut and hauled away. Oregon Wild and Blue Mtn Biodiversity Project are completed opposed to this legislation.

Senate Wyden's O & C Land Grant Act (S. 1784) has been introduced in November 2013 would double logging over current levels upon 1 million acres of BLM managed Oregon-California Railroad Grants Lands (O & C) in western Oregon. To accomplish this Senator Wyden proposes to suspend and weaken current environmental laws for at least 10 years placing several threatened species, including Coho salmon, the Northern spotted owl, and the marbled murrelet at risk of extinction.

We did this without any help from outside groups. Now we are requesting you help us pay for banners, copies, and perhaps a future billboard (we are all volunteer org) contact us via our website http://eco-advocates.org
The Good: NW and National environmental groups including the Sierra Club have signed a public position letter to oppose Wyden's Western Oregon's
O & C Land Grant Act. Here is a link to the letter for reference and to help one write succinct and effective letters to your local newspapers editor.
Bad: Oregon Democrats especially King Kitzhaber is leading the way to suspend and avoid compliance with environmental laws including the Endangered Species Act on State Forest Lands.
King Kitzhaber has decreed that the Elliott State Forests must be sold to the highest bidder so the State of Oregon can avoid complying with a federal court case and the Endangered Species Act to protect the threatened marbled murrelet, a Pacific seabird threatened with extinction.

Need: All forest protection as well as biodiversity protection groups must be urged by you to create a campaign as well as public positions opposing all these Democratic Party heinous and destructive bills as well as any legislation that seeks to suspend environmental laws to increase logging and forest biomass extraction on public lands.
The bottom line is if you are a Democrat voter who wants to protect our last ancient forest ecosystems, then these ecosystem need you to publicly express your dismay/outrage that the Democratic Party would support such draconian anti environmental legislation and actions. Further Democrat politicians need to hear that if they vote for these bills that you will no longer support the Democratic Party in any shape or form in future elections. Some may call this hardball politics. I call it being effective and stopping the plunder of our last ancient forests on public lands.
