Oxfam's 2014 Report: Working for the Few: Political Capture and Economic Inequality

Radical structural change is necessary to reverse exploding inequality and create meaningful work filling people with joy and public spirit. Oxfam has been working for 70 years to overcome poverty, mass unemployment and environmental destruction. The elite know how to make their privileges permanent and hollow out "equal opportunities" for the remaining 99%.

Cascading Privileges 24.Jan.2014 10:17

marc

We need conventional and unconventional reforms, returning the top tax rate to 50 or 70 percent (it was above 70% from 1938 to 1982), closing the tax havens (costing us $1 trillion in revenue every year) and building community centers as in Vancity (surrogate counseling and classes, a "third way" beyond state and market).

The 32-page Oxfam report "Working for the Few" speaks of rigging the system and cascading privileges. The super-rich know how to make their privileges permanent and make "equal opportunities" rather hollow for the 99%! I'm translating two articles that seem very illuminating on the strength of neoliberalism and the myths of "personal performance": capitalism as a secular religion and the state as a human cage. "Personal performance" is really based on the work of past generations and state investments. Profit above people is a fetish religion that like self-righteousness is oblivious to long-term necessities and public spirit.
