Actions to Fight Pipelines and Fracking Taking Place All over US. . . Including Portland!

All across the country, actions are being taken to fight tar sands, fracking, and pipelines. Citizens in Chicago, Kentucky, San Francisco, Oklahoma, Alabama, Indiana, Texas, Idaho, Utah, Washington DC, and many other sites around the US have been up in arms, protesting proposals for various fossil fuel pipelines and other projects. Here in Portland, we've got some upcoming events worth investing our energies into as well...
On Thursday August 22, 2013, from 6:30-8:30 pm, Portland Rising Tide is hosting an orientation at Laughing Horse Book and Film Collective at 12 NE 10th Ave, Portland, Oregon for people to learn more about the group's work and how they can get involved. There will be a discussion of the onslaught of fossil fuel export terminals proposed in the Cascadia region. Presenters will also talk about the work of Rising Tide to oppose these terminals; climate justice and direct action; and how people can plug-in as organizers and participants.

On Saturday August 24, 2013, from 10:00-3:00 pm, Hella 503 Collective, the Parasol Climate Collective, and Portland Rising Tide are organizing at the NE corner of Northgate Park in Portland, near the intersection of N. Clarendon Ave. and N. Fessenden St., to go door-to-door to talk to St. John's residents about climate change. Canvassers will be provided with a script and a short training, and will specifically be talking to residents about the fossil fuel export terminals that are already impacting St. John's - which has oil trains coming through every week en route to the terminal at Port Westward - and the planned export of coal through the Pacific Northwest. Canvassers will also discuss how communities are already feeling the impacts of climate change, direct action, and ways to get involved, including study groups. Anyone joining in is advised to bring water, a snack, and good shoes. Pizza will be provided for canvassers by Vincente's Pizza afterward!
