In support of "Music,The Arts" in Public Schools, Portland Public Schools proudly presents "A Jazz Celebration," featuring internationally renowned Bassist, Singer, Songwriter, Producer and Arranger: The Legendary Michael Henderson. This event will take place on Friday, January 25, 2013, 6:00 PM at Cleveland High School auditorium. Performers will include jazz bands from: Hosford Middle Schoo!, Sellwood Middle School! Beaumont Middle School! Battle Ground High School (Vancouver)! Cleveland High School! and the esteemed American Music Program! Mr. Henderson will perform with each of the schools featuring the ORCHESTRAL ARRANGEMENTS of his music! The middle school bands will start the show, and the high school groups will begin at 8:30PM! ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT THE PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS' MUSIC PROGRAMS! Four-time Grammy nominee and recording artist Michael Henderson has worked with such renowned artists as: Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Miles Davis, Phyllis Hyman, Roberta Flack, Leslie Uggams, The Four Tops, Aretha Franklin, and Angela Bofil. Arranger Michael Henderson - BIO Michael Henderson first gained world wide recognition as an acclaimed young bass player with groups such as "The Detroit Emeralds", "The Fantastic Four", "The Funk Brothers" and was the funk anchor for Stevie Wonder, at the tender age of 16! Musicians marveled at his prowess and knowledge of his instrument. After one such extraordinary, truly inspiring Stevie Wonder concert, Legendary Trumpeter Miles Davis made his way backstage only to inform Stevie, "I'm Takin' Yo F%@ Bass Player!" With Miles, a new style of playing was developed, "FUSION Michael Henderson went on to perform on more than 50 Miles Davis Albums. Henderson played bass on the following chart-toppers; "You're The Man," with singer/friend Marvin Gaye, (Lending his signature bass sound, Henderson co-wrote and played on many of the compositions from the newly released Marvin Gaye epic tribute titled "What's Going On: 40th Anniversary 2CD/LP Super Deluxe Edition-Box Set, considered by critics to be the GREATEST SOUL ALBUM EVER RECORDED as well as Marvin Gayes' "Let's Get it On {Deluxe Edition}" the album/single "Whatcha See is Whatcha Get!" and "In The Rain" both by Super-Group, "The Dramatics", Johnny Taylors' "I Believe in You (You Believe In Me) to name but a few... Henderson went on to write, sing and record his first hit, "Valentine Love" featuring the smooth vocals of Ms. Jean Carne on the Norman Connors album, "Saturday Night Special." Following this hit release was the super phenomenal, MULTI-MILLION SELLING, oft recorded, "You Are My Starship" from the Norman Connors Album of the same name, "You Are My Starship." Subsequently, there were more FAMOUS DUETS ie., Phyllis Hyman - "We Both Need Each Other" & "Can't We Fall In Love Again", Roberta Flack - "At The Concert", and Rena Scott - "Take Me, I'm Yours!" From this vast library of hit music, Michael Henderson's compositions have been re-recorded and/or sampled by some of todays' leading artist keeping the legacy of Michael Henderson alive, well, current and relative! Last week, NBC LATE NIGHT Comic Jimmy Fallon spoofed a Michael Henderson song in a skit for the opening segment of his hit television show! Some of the artist who have re-recorded and/or sampled Michael Henderson music are: L L Cool J, TAMIA, RICK JAMES, THE DAZZ BAND, MOBB DEEP, JAGGED EDGE, SNOOP DOGG, EMINEM, JAY-Z, BEYONCE, KENNY LATTIMORE, CONYA DOSS, MAYSA, QUEEN PEN, and MANY MANY MORE! For his contributions to the artistic, creative growth and development of today's' youth, Henderson, a recipient of the "Jazz At Drew Award" given by the highly esteemed Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, LEGACY MUSIC SERIES, has been inducted as "Jazz At Drew Ambassador of Music", and proudly serves on The Ellington Advisory Council for The Duke Ellington School of The Arts, Washington DC., Michael Henderson also contributes to his favorite charities, The Jackie Robinson Foundation and The Center for Closing The Health Gap Health Expo, greater Cincinnati.
