City Council Hearing on Fluoridation Vote

Randy Leonard wants to move the election date for the fluoridation issue up a whole year to May 21, 2013. Please come to the hearing at City Council and join the grassroots efforts to stop the rush that will greatly decrease the amount of time that the public will have to research and discuss this critical issue.
Clean Water Portland has called for a truly independent scientific review panel top evaluate the current state of scientific evidence relating to water fluoridation with a focus on issues important to Portlanders. This scientific review panel would need at least six months to conduct their research and come up with a decision. By moving the election date up, Randy Leonard will preclude the possibility of the people of Portland getting the benefit of hearing from an unbiased panel of scientists.

Sign ups to testify at the hearing will happen ahead of time and we recommend getting there as early as 1pm.

We encourage you to bring an 8.5x11 sign into Council Chambers, larger sizes are not permitted.

Please invite everyone you know, this is a hugely important issue and will affect every person in the Portland area!

UPDATED ALERT! 17.Dec.2012 09:24

Action Alert!
Stop the Effort to Fast-Track Fluoridation Once Again!

You've likely seen the news: Fluoridation promoters and Randy Leonard are pushing the City Council at their meeting THIS Thursday the 20th to speed up the referendum vote by a full year to May of 2013!

Please ask the City Council to reject the effort to fast track fluoridation once again!
- Call and email the City Council at the contacts below!
- Join us this Thursday 12 pm for a rally at City Hall
followed by public testimony at 2pm!

Instead of a rushed decision, ask the City to support creation of a truly independent scientific review panel that can prepare a report on the current science regarding the health risks of fluoridation and its effectiveness. If the City and fluoridationists are so confident they have science on their side then why not support an independent review that can inform voters of the scientific facts about fluoridation?
We trust the science but will they?

Tell the City that Portland voters deserve a thoughtful review of current fluoride science conducted by neutral scientists who have not taken a position for or against fluoridation.

Ask them not to thwart the public process once again 33,000 Portland voters signed the referendum for a May 2014 vote, and the City should respect the will of the people, not take away the time needed for an independent scientific review to take place.

Fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous communist plot we have ever had to face.

How do you get communist and capitalist mixed up? 17.Dec.2012 18:31

Literal Translation

Its an industrial by product of agent orange, which was originally used to kill communists.

Calcium Folouride(naturally available in plants, sea salt, sea plants, etc... is small quantities is great for our bodies.

Sodium Fluoride is a synthetic waste product of the nuclear, aluminium, and phosphate fertilizer industries. This fluoride has an amazing capacity to combine and increase the potency of other toxic materials. The sodium fluoride obtained from industrial waste and added to water supplies is also already contaminated with lead, aluminum, and cadmium.

They're not the same!!!! Most Sodium Flouride is now being produced in China and India.

Reproductive and Developmental Effects of Fluoride

This chapter provides an update on studies of the reproductive and developmental effects of fluoride published since the earlier NRC (1993) review. Studies on reproductive effects are summarized first, primarily covering structural and functional alterations of the reproductive tract. This is followed by a discussion of developmental toxicity in animal and human studies.

More than 50 publications since 1990 have focused on the reproductive effects of fluoride. Most of the studies used animal models, primarily rodents, and evaluated structural or functional alterations in the male reproductive tract associated with fluoride. Fewer animal studies evaluated the effects of fluoride on female reproductive tract structure or function. In this section, reports of fluoride effects on reproduction in animal models are reviewed first, followed by a discussion of the available studies of humans.
Animal Studies

The large number of studies gleaned from a search of the literature since 1990 that evaluated reproductive tract structure or function in animal models are outlined in Table 6-1, listing the fluoride dosing regimens and main observations. Most of the studies were conducted for the purpose of hazard identification and involved high doses of fluoride to reveal potentially sensitive reproductive-tract targets and pathways.

NaF caused lessened fertility rate when normal cycling female mice were mated with treated mice. Large numbers of deflagellated spermatozoa with acrosomal, midpiece, and tail abnormalities were observed. Significant recovery in sperm count, sperm motility, and fertility rate was observed after withdrawal of treatment for 2 months.

Although the U.S. Centers for Disease Control hails water fluoridation as one of the "top ten public health achievements of the twentieth century," most of the western world, including the vast majority of western Europe, does not fluoridate its water supply.

At present, 97% of the western European population drinks non-fluoridated water. This includes: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and approximately 90% of both the United Kingdom and Spain. Although some of these countries fluoridate their salt, the majority do not. (The only western European countries that allow salt fluoridation are Austria, France, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland.)

Despite foregoing "one of the top ten public health achievements of the twentieth century," tooth decay rates have declined in Europe as precipitously over the past 50 years as they have in the United States. This raises serious questions about the CDC's assertion that the decline of tooth decay in the United States since the 1950s is largely attributable to the advent of water fluoridation.

Czech Republic:

"Since 1993, drinking water has not been treated with fluoride in public water supplies throughout the Czech Republic. Although fluoridation of drinking water has not actually been proscribed it is not under consideration because this form of supplementation is considered:

uneconomical (only 0.54% of water suitable for drinking is used as such; the remainder is employed for hygiene etc. Furthermore, an increasing amount of consumers (particularly children) are using bottled water for drinking (underground water usually with fluor)
unecological (environmental load by a foreign substance)
unethical ("forced medication")
toxicologically and phyiologically debateable (fluoridation represents an untargeted form of supplementation which disregards actual individual intake and requirements and may lead to excessive health-threatening intake in certain population groups; [and] complexation of fluor in water into non biological active forms of fluor."

May 2007: A study of European public opinion on water fluoridation, published in the journal Community Dentistry & Oral Epidemiology, reports that the "vast majority of people opposed water fluoridation." According to the study, Europeans opposed fluoridation for the following reasons:

"Many felt dental health was an issue to be dealt with at the level of the individual, rather than a solution to be imposed en masse. While people accepted that some children were not encouraged to brush their teeth, they proposed other solutions to addressing these needs rather than having a solution of unproved safety imposed on them by public health authorities whom they did not fully trust. They did not see why they should accept potential side effects in order that a minority may benefit. In particular, water was something that should be kept as pure as possible, even though it was recognized that it already contains many additives." (See study summary)

November 2004: After months of consulation, Scotland - which is currently unfluoridated - rejected plans to add fluoride to the nation's water.

April 9, 2003: The City Parliament of Basel, Switzerland voted 73 to 23 to stop Basel's 41 year water fluoridation program. Basel was the only city in Switzerland to fluoridate its water, and the only city in continental western Europe, outside of a few areas in Spain.

Tooth Decay in F vs NF Countries

Fluoride advocates often claim that the reduction in tooth decay that has occurred since the 1950s is the result of the widespread introduction of fluoridated water. In 1999, for example, the Centers for Disease Control stated that "as a result [of water fluoridation], dental caries declined precipitously during the second half of the 20th century." As support for this assertion, the CDC published the following figure:
Statements from European Health, Water, & Environment Authorities on Water Fluoridation
