Demo for the elephants of the Oregon Zoo
The Oregon Zoo
Saturday, December 15
12 to 2pm
sponsored by IDA and Real Friends of Packy and the Animals of the Oregon Zoo.
Come out and show your support for the long-suffering elephants at the Oregon Zoo. Packy is now 50. He has never experienced one day of freedom despite the fact that in 2008 we voted for a multi million dollar bond measure to pay for a preserve so that he might do so. Now the zoo has a new baby whose future is bleak regardless of whether she ends up in a circus like other zoo elephants have or not. The public is at last getting more informed thanks in large part to the excellent reporting by the Seattle Times. Come out and give a shout out for the elephants. IDA and Real Friends will provide flyers to hand out to the public.
Recently the Oregon Zoo has been in the headlines for their contract with a company that trains elephants for entertainment. Their plan to give the new baby elephant to this company backfired when they were deluged with bad press. Now they are backpedaling saying they will keep this baby. However, the Oregon Zoo has sold other elephants to circuses before and they are under contract with this company, Have Trunk Will Travel, which has been shown to use cruel training tactics. The bottom line is that elephants do not belong in zoos. There simply is not enough space. That is why the voters of Portland supported a $125 million dollar bond measure in 2008. Part of those funds are for capital expenses for a multi acre offsite preserve for the elephants. However, the zoo still has no plan, no operating expenses and no idea when or if they will ever get them. Now while the public is being informed is the time exert more pressure on the zoo. So join the demo and educate the public and let the zoo and Metro know we are not going to allow our elephants to continue to live such terrible lives in captivity anymore. If you are on facebook, please go to our page and accept the invitation to join the demo. And please like our page, Real Friends of Packy and the Animals of the Oregon Zoo.
