Call to action!
15 year old refuses to participate in touring an animal research facility and is publicly humiliated and targeted by teacher!
C3 students were notified on 7/12 that they would have to go to the Oregon National Primate Research Center in Beaverton for a field trip on 7/12. They were given extensive rules to follow for this field trip including no cell-phones, cameras etc. This institute is a literal hell for primates; they are subjected to excruciating medical testing that has not resulted in cures or medical break troughs. A 15 year old student in this class educated her peers on the torture that takes place at this facility. She passed out informative information packets on animal testing and this facility to her classmates and told them and her teacher Holly Thompson, she could not morally go on this field-trip (before class as not to disrupt class ).This student, told the teacher she was disappointed in this program and didn't understand how they could support this facility. The teacher, in front of other students told this student she would never make it as a nurse (this is her life goal, to help people) if she couldn't handle animal testing. The teacher also told her she would lose points for not going.
Students in this program are considered at risk and disadvantaged. This particular student has risen above life obstacles that many don't face in their entire life-time. This program gave her hope for the future, helped her find a career path (nursing), set goals and then tore her down, telling her she won't make it as a nurse because she is standing up for something she believes in. The teacher targeted her in class for the rest of the day, the student remained polite but the teacher humiliated her and smashed her confidence once again. These students' guardians have taken her out of this class to prevent future targeting and humiliation from this vindictive teacher. Please stand with this student and show solidarity by letting the teacher and this program know that they should not force students to attend animal research facilities or tear them down for their beliefs. This is a four year program and we hope this student can attend again, with supportive educated instructors that can embrace differences and create a safe learning environment.
Please call, Holly the teacher at 503-915-2664 or email her at Hollyi@mail.irco.org and let her know this behavior is not okay.

Whatever benefit the teacher might believe there was to this visit, she lacked basic common sense. Or maybe she assumed "at risk" youths wouldn't have an opinion? Or they should "be grateful"? The arrogance is overwhelming.
Also the teacher is lying, or at least not telling the whole truth: NO ONE I know of who is a nurse(RN or LP) is required to have personal contact with animal testing in the course of their job.
I get they may have wanted a serious science outing. But the sensible thing would either to have chosen something obviously less controversial, or provide an option to conscientious objectioners.
Teacher: "I had NO IDEA this could possibly be upsetting to anyone! Because I have been living in a cave!"
What a moron. Grade the teachers judgement: F-
