Four Chickens Liberated from an Oregon Egg Farm by the ALF

Egg farm in Oregon is raided by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) for the second time this year.

From Animal Liberation Frontline

Egg farm in Oregon is raided by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) for the second time this year.

This week, Bite Back received an anonymous communique from the Animal Liberation Front claiming responsibility for the liberation of four chickens from an Oregon factory farm. The ALF communique stated this was the same farm from which six hens were liberated in January.

The communique reads, in full:

"During the second week of May 2012, two activists entered an egg farm located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. 4 hens were removed from the premises and placed in good homes where they will live out the rest of their natural lives. This is the same farm where 6 hens were liberated last January.

This action was done to save these individual animals from the torture and misery intrinsic to industrialized egg production, as well as to demonstrate that although we may not be able to free every animal, we can free some. This was done in full solidarity with the anarchists and animal liberationists facing state repression here on the west coast and abroad.

Freeing the prisoners.
ALF

**We are intentionally omitting the name, address, and specifics of the farm targeted. The relatively small number of animals taken will most likely, once again, go unnoticed by the farmer and will hopefully allow us to take advantage of the non-existent security on this farm for future raids and investigations."

....

It's been over a year since the Humane Society brokered and agreement with United Egg producers:

 http://www.humanesociety.org/news/press_releases/2011/07/egg_agreement.html

And Willamette Egg Farms is (apparently) open about it's operation:

 http://www.youtube.com/user/WillametteEgg/videos
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sMjPUkrWcg
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr42XPoYnbk

Unless you have PROOF they are abusing chicken's, contrary to what the video's show, I hope you're not harassing Willamette Egg Farms. They are part of the solution. The industry standard is moving to humane pods, and Willamette Egg Farms has embraced this. (they raise both conventional and free range eggs). Things have been improving on the factory farm front, though of course abusers need to be called out. But since changes are being made, each operation needs to be judged individually. And OP has not given us anything to go on.

Mind, I'll still be buying free range: the yolk is darker and the taste is better. But the new pods aren't anything like the cramped cages of years past; if someone accidentally buys non-free range I'll use em(but only in baking)instead of returning them(what I used to do).

[For the record, I just found this information out a month ago myself. People really need to spread the work when things actually get BETTER]

I think the above comment demonstrates perfectly the problem with welfare legislation. Not only do these laws do little to nothing to "improve" the actual conditions for non human animals used for food production, but it actually makes people feel good about participating in their exploitation. Instead of building a movement against all animal use and exploitation, animal welfare legislation only further entrenches the culture of speciesism and domination of non-humans. I think that the animal rights/liberation movements needs to seriously reconsider it's support of animal welfare legislation as a tactic and to critically reexamine the role of national organization such as HSUS and PETA.

You're entitled to your opinion 24.May.2012 08:52

"Instead of building a movement against all animal use"

But this is never going to happen and you know it. All tribal humans have used animal products, and there are places (Tibet, the Arctic) that if you don't, you don't eat.

Animal use does not automatically equal exploitation, and to keep insisting it does is not only a lie, but will impede your efforts to stop actual abuse and exploitation.

So you have a choice: wage a quitoxtic crusade to stop everyone, including tribal peoples, to stop using animals in any way shape form and continue to be ignored and mocked like PETA...

Or put your energy towards stopping real abuse where you'll actually get public support and change public policy.

It's up to you.

Get a few chickens. The eggs will be 100% better, and chickens are awesome pets. You can give eggs to your neighbors and stop supporting these monstrosities that confine these birds to horrible conditions.

If you handle them from a tiny age they turn into friendly little critters. We had some that would come sit with us on the porch like cats. And you won't have to feel guilty about eating the eggs.

Good input Rex. 24.May.2012 11:09

cultural appropriation and happy exploitation 24.May.2012 12:30

"All tribal humans have used animal products, and there are places (Tibet, the Arctic) that if you don't, you don't eat"

Your comment is cultural appropriation. You cannot find a way to justify your actions within your own cultural framework, so you steal from another. This has tactical advantage because if I answered your question you would force me into a position where I would be the one painted as a racist and a cultural imperialist. However, the ability to appropriate culture and use it as a justification for unethical behavior is the actual illustration of imperialism and racism.

"Animal use does not automatically equal exploitation, and to keep insisting it does is not only a lie, but will impede your efforts to stop actual abuse and exploitation. "

In our society non-human animals are chattel property. This is especially the case with animals used for food production. Every aspect of their lives are controlled by humans (from how they are bred, to how they live, to how they die). The commodification of non-human animals as property is by definition exploitation. The only lie being told is the one of "humane" and "feel good" animal exploitation being parroted by industry and activists alike.

If you actually take a look at the so called "historic animal welfare legislation" that was brokered by HSUS and United Egg producers, you'll find more white washing. The legislation, which won't take effect for 18 years, will only provide marginal improvements to the welfare of hens on egg farms. This legislation does nothing for animals now and it does little to nothing for animals in the future. It will, however, provide the egg industry with a huge marketing tool and the ability to rebrand their products as "humane". Meanwhile animals are still exploited as chattel property, eco-systems continue to be destroyed by industrial factory farming and the public can continue participating in this exploitation conscience free. The only ones who win in all this are the animal abuse industries themselves. It's proponents of animal welfare legislation, not direct action activists, who are the ones standing in the way of efforts to stop animal abuse and exploitation.

Clear Thinking 24.May.2012 13:33

no one here but us chickens

I don't know whose chickens I see rolling down 205, but they don't look very humanely treated. They are crowded--4 to a cage. The have feathers missing and raw skin. They appear listless and terrified. And that's their life.

Also, keep in mind that no chicken industry is humane. Male laying chicks have no value, so they are killed at birth (in essentially a wood chipper--the industry standard) or often abandoned. Rescue organizations are currently inundated with unwanted roosters.

Yes, I believe "use" is the definition of exploitation. If it's not by consent, and the "used" party doesn't benefit, it is exploitation.

Yes, in evirnoments where and times when humans were few and were as likely to be a meal as to find one, killing an animal had a different ethic (context). But there is no way to avoid the fact that killing causes pain--as does a life of imprisonment. It's best not to take or use animals.

exploitation 24.May.2012 15:17

d.

"Animal use does not automatically equal exploitation."
Please provide one or two examples of when this can possibly be true. As far as I know "use" = "exploitation".

it depends on your definition of "use" i guess 25.May.2012 09:04

The chickens we had were able to wander freely on around 3-4 acres. They ate bugs, scratched in the dirt, and roosted up in trees sometimes. They would come inside the barn at night and get in the coop to stay safe. We fed them and let them run around and be chickens. In return, they laid eggs and we ate them.

I don't see how that is possibly exploitative. We never ate the chickens themselves. And they were friendly and would come running to us when we called them for feed.

I guess if you buy eggs in a store, chances are that the chickens that laid those eggs are not in a similar situation. "cage free" isn't as free as we might like to think. They are probably confined to a small muddy patch of earth with a ton of other "free" chickens.

So again. If you must eat eggs, it's worth it to get a chicken or two if you have the space for them to live comfortably. Nobody suffers that way. And your neighbors will probably love the free eggs since you'll have an abundance.

Nobody suffers??? 28.May.2012 09:28

did you mis

Did you miss the part about male chicks? If you are buying chickens from a breeder, you are participating in the abundant creation and destruction of life at a whim.

If you want to help, rescue a rooster.

The same, I take it, is true for male goats. No one wants them. And females have to be kept pregnant to produce milk (same with cows--there is no mythical, milk-giving animal without babies as a by-product, and what happens to those babies is usually not good).

Go rescue some animals and stop living off them. Give something back.

Great points and input– -{did you mis}- 28.May.2012 15:04
