Reminder: City of Portland Human Rights Commission's Public Forum on Human Trafficking Community Partner,

The City of Portland Human Rights Commission (HRC) would like to cordially invite you to an upcoming public forum on human trafficking on Wednesday, April 25, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The event will be held in the Portland Building at 1120 SW 5th Avenue (between Madison and Main Streets), in the 2nd Floor Auditorium.

This forum is free and open to the public. Food and beverage will be provided.

As you may or may not be aware, human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery where people profit from the control and exploitation of others. Human traffickers use violence, threats, lies and other forms of coercion to force people to work against their will in various industries, including the commercial sex trade, domestic service, agriculture and manufacturing. Victims of human trafficking include both children and adults who are coerced or deceived into working under inhumane and exploitative conditions, often with little or no pay. Human trafficking is considered to be one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world.

The forum will include presentations and testimony by experts and advocates working to eliminate human trafficking in the Portland area, along with a question and answer session with members of the audience. The purpose of the forum, which is twofold, is to:

bring the community together to discuss this important issue and gather information on efforts being made to end human trafficking, particularly in immigrant populations, in and around Portland, and to identify what can be done to make those efforts more effective.
serve as a launching point for the HRC's Human Trafficking Task Force (HTTF), which will be comprised of members of the HRC along with representatives from various government agencies, law enforcement, nongovernmental organizations and individual community members. The information gathered at the forum will inform the goals and agenda of the HTTF moving forward.
Please consider attending and feel free to pass this invitation on to your networks, and any interested community members - including those that may not hear about this kind of forum through traditional channels.

In addition, feel free to pass this invitation on through your Facebook friends through the forum event page at www.facebook.com/events/362659300444114/

However, we would greatly appreciate your RSVP, which can be provided to Sara Hussein at  hrc@portlandoregon.gov or at 503-823-3994.
