Today marks the two year memorial of the BP oil drilling disaster, the largest man-made oil disaster in American history. GRN's new video, featuring Dr. John, Ani Difranco and more, provides an update on where the Gulf is today.
Here in the Gulf, BP's oil is still being found on beaches and in the wetlands. Researchers have found impacts of that oil on every level of the food chain, from zooplankton to dolphins, and on important wildlife habitat, from deep water corals to mangrove rookeries.
It is outrageous that the Congress has still not sent a single bill to the President to sign into law that would protect or restore the Gulf's communities and ecosystems. But we're getting closer...The RESTORE Act has now passed both the Senate and the House of Representatives and is moving to a conference committee. Unfortunately, there are poison-pill amendments that make passage far from certain, so we continue to need your voice.
GRN has created a video to commemorate this two year mark and help keep the story of the Gulf alive. We have enlisted the help of some familiar faces to attract attention. You may recognize artists such as Dr. John, Ani DiFranco, Stanton Moore, and Portugal The Man. Please take a moment to watch our call to action and then share with your family and friends.
The time has come for Congress to take immediate action to protect the Gulf from future oil disasters through the creation of a Gulf Citizens' Advisory Council and to restore the Gulf with dedicated restoration funding. Two years later, the Gulf deserves the nation's commitment.
Please watch and share.
For the Gulf,
Aaron Viles
Deputy Director
PS The media have largely moved on from this disaster, so it's critical our supporters help remind their friends, colleagues and family about the need for action for the Gulf. Please consider forwarding this e-mail.
