gumballs vs $48,000 27.Oct.2011 22:11

If I understand Stan correctly, he is upset about the cost in police overtime. He is angry that he and the rest of us Portland taxpayers will have to pay less than the cost of a gumball to cover that overtime. Curiously, he is not upset about the national debt of almost $15 trillion, which will cost every person in the US about $48,000 to pay back. So, if Stan has two kids, they are on the hook for almost $150,000. My question is why he is not upset about that?
Why is the debt so large? That is a complicated issue. Basically, however, it was the combination of tax cuts with increased military spending in addition to the bailouts to the banks and corporations that have undermined our economy. And that happened because corporations have been able to control the politicians through massive campaign contributions.
We have been down this road before-and it was Republican Teddy Roosevelt who went after the robber barons and broke up the large corporations. However, it was not enough to stop the Wall Street gambling that resulted in the great depression. History does sort of repeat itself. But we have the first amendment to protect us in speaking up and demanding changes from our government--which the founders of our country expected us to do. They did not trust corporations and did not write any protections for corporations into the Constitution.
But we the people can voice our concerns and demand that our government make the necessary changes to reform our economic and political systems. Not only do we have the right to do that, we also have the responsibility to do that.
So Stan, come on down!
