Post Occupy Everywhere news snippets #2!

If you have some news from the hundreds of occupations around the country and the world post it here! Lots of little news snippets are of interest but too small for an article, so post them as comments to this article!
The corporate media is owned by the super rich and does their bidding. They will not represent justice movements honestly. People have to be the media. The more people who contribute to independent media the more authentic journalism that will be available for citizens to read. So many still are captives of the commercial media. Break through the corporate veil!

The heavy-handed crackdown on Occupy Oakland and other protest sites has many comparing the police tactics to those used in overseas countries that do not share the U.S.'s traditions of liberal democracy. OAKLAND MAYOR SAYS SHE WILL MINIMIZE POLICE PRESENCE AND THAT SHE SUPPORTS THE M 28.Oct.2011 00:12

After the first heavy-handed police crackdown on demonstrators in Oakland, Mayor Jean Quan wrote a statement on her Facebook page praising police for closing down the Occupy Oakland protest encampment. Now, facing anger from across the world, Quan is backing down on her aggressive language and even says that she supports the goals of the movement. She is committing to minimize police presence in the plaza and "build a community effort to improve communications and dialogue with the demonstrators." Part of her statement:

"We support the goals of the Occupy Wall Street movement: we have high levels of unemployment and we have high levels of foreclosure that makes Oakland part of the 99% too. We are a progressive city and tolerant of many opinions. We may not always agree, but we all have a right to be heard.

I want to thank everyone for the peaceful demonstration at Frank Ogawa Park tonight, and thank the city employees who worked hard to clean up the plaza so that all activities can continue including Occupy Wall Street. We have decided to have a minimal police presence at the plaza for the short term and build a community effort to improve communications and dialogue with the demonstrators."

Earlier this week, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed abruptly uprooted the protesters at Occupy Atlanta, arresting more than 50 demonstrators. State Sen. Vincent Fort (D), who was arrested with demonstrators, blasted Reed for the move, saying, "This is the most peaceful place in Georgia. At the urging of the business community, he's moving people out. Shame on him."

Last night, nearly 200 protesters gathered in Centennial Olympic Park to plan Occupy Atlanta's next steps. The group will be announcing a "reorganization" and may find a new place to encamp.

Atlanta Mayoral Candidate Al Bartell issued a statement calling on the protesters to be promptly released from detainment: "The City of Atlanta's policy on the right for public assembly has withstood the test of time, even to the end of the twentieth century. At midnight last night, Atlanta's Mayor destroyed the cornerstone of the American Constitution and threw this city back in time to an era of violence against community. I am calling for the immediate release of the Occupy Atlanta protesters and to re-establish the integrity of Atlanta's public policy on the right for public assembly."

Occupy Boston pulls two members from finance team for lack of transparency 28.Oct.2011 09:41

The group, which is seeking more transparency in financial institutions has excluded Paul Carnes and Sidney Sherrel from financial decisions. The pair allegedly didn't follow the group's rules when it comes to spending money and organizing a fundraiser. Occupy member Nadeem Mazen says the actions of one of the accused were in poor taste. He says Paul was using his spending, "To appropriate channels of power and channels of influence."

Mazen hopes this incident will serve as a lesson for financial institutions and the government to address failures of transparency.

100.000 people participate to a huge demonstration in Budapest 28.Oct.2011 10:55

10/24/2011

About 100 thousand people rallied in the heart of Budapest on 23rd October 2011 demanding system change. The demonstration ended without any atrocities and, despite the unfavorable weather conditions, the organizers managed to repeat the same turnout they had drawn in March 15. Independent Hungarian newspapers emphasize the "liberated" spirit of the protest in their summaries. Young and old people stood shoulder to shoulder to protest the government. The details of the civil sphere initiatives represented at the protest and the various causes were as follows: the movement against Hungary's media law, the constitution, the treatment of the Roma and the homeless, government attacks on the country's cultural institutions, the erosion of democracy, the push-back against workers' rights and the arrogance of the government and its rule by force.
