Why not? 25.Sep.2011 13:03

I posted this to another thread, but thought it warranted repeating here - I really hope that Portland anarchists are planning on involving themselves in this event, to save it from being a reformist dead end. It's really interesting to see the organizing - lots of people coming out of the wood work, but many naive about how things really work. In opening an autonomous space and encouraging collective resistance, this event has a lot of potential. It also has the potential to be recuperated pretty quickly without radical voices pushing it towards something meaningful. But decision making is by modified consensus, which means that an anarchist presence can help to influence the direction the occupation takes. For engagement!

While I'm excited about the possibilities here, I have a few questions.

1. If this is all about democratic participation, general assemblies, and consensus, what is meant by "Certain members of the group will cover what and what not to do. Where to be, how to behave, as well as where to go."?

Some self-appointed group is going to tell everyone how to behave? And you are going to agree to not protest in the square when asked? What's going to happen when the cops tell you not to camp in the park, which brings me to my second question:

2. Why Waterfront Park? There's pretty much nothing around there. No stores, no people, nothing except a river and a busy street, blocking escape routes. Seems a little dangerous and invisible to me.

To everything there is a season. This is the season to rise, insist, resist, join together in our common mandate to end oppression, repression.
There is one message: Peace, Ecology, Social Justice. When all the dots are connected, when all the loci merge we will

Rise, Insist, Resist, Join together in our common mandate to end oppression, repression.

Do it now or...

Bad shit gonna come down.

OCCUPY PORTLAND GOES LIVE
September 26th, 2011 occupyportland March Preparation 7 comments

Welcome to the central hub for the Occupy Portland branch of the Occupy Together Movement. In solidarity with Occupy Wall Street - we will be showing our disregard for the corruption and greed of the wealthiest 1% of this country.

The wealthiest 1% of this country who purchase politicians and push their corporate agendas without any integrity or accountability. The wealthiest 1% of this country who constantly put their profit motivated interest ahead of the world's dignity. The wealthiest 1% of this country who get billions in bailout programs while we struggle with unemployment, foreclosure, poverty, and rising inflation.

If you have been feeling the effects of their irresponsible and selfish actions - come and let your voice be heard. If you don't accept the ineffectiveness of our broken democracy - come and let your voice be heard. If you understand that the only road towards change is the road that we shall pave ourselves - come and let your voice be heard.

This is a wake up call to the world - it is time to stop being passive. It is time to stop waiting for our supposed leaders to act in our interest. It is time to stop expressing our disregard silently. It is time to command respect and demand the attention of a broken system. It is time to take the power from the 1% and again return it to the people. It is time to stand together and rise - to raise awareness - and to be heard. It is time to return to the vision that our forefathers expressed in the Constitution of the United States.

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around - will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
-Thomas Jefferson

We the 99% stand together - taking back our dignity and voice to say - NO MORE!
Wake up Portland... it is time.
