In a few ways, the UFC is a unique urban-ag organization, as a non-profit distributed urban farm. We started in 2009, when we had one garden in the neighborhood, and operated a grassroots weekly farmers market. Now two years later we are up to ten sites, over a half-acre of land (distributed around the city), and over a hundred volunteers! All produce is either distributed to the people who helped grow it or donated the land, or donated to emergency food pantries.
We're currently an all volunteer-run organization, but there are still some expenses that require cash - seeds, straw, water, irrigation systems, etc. We are attempting to take on significantly more land this year, and already have the volunteers to make it happen - we just need to raise some money! To this end, we've set up a Kickstarter site, and need to raise $5000 by June 29. The link to the site is www.kickstarter.com/projects/43522468/urban-farm-collective. There's also a video showing some of the work we've been doing so far.
Obviously it would be great if any of you are able to contribute to the fundraising effort, but it'd also be extremely helpful if you could forward this message around to your local food communities where you live. We're hoping that this Kickstarter can help us raise awareness around the country about the work we're doing in Portland, and the widest exposure we can get will help us reach our goal.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the Urban Farm Collective. Thanks for your help!
