"panem et circenses"

"iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli / uendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim / imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se / continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, / panem et circenses."

"Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses"

~ Juvenal, Satire ...10.77-81
As the gap between the mega wealthy and the poor widens.. as the growing Nouveau poor loses any social assistance... as poverty becomes the new standard for the masses... as "food insecurity" grows with in the homes of the poor... as debt f...or hope of a better life becomes indebted servitude... as consumer Christmas taunts the impoverished and calls for more debt... as a homeless shelter or cardboard boxes becomes the home of the discarded... as lack of real health care kills another family member... as health insurance fraud steals more money from the dwindling middle class... as the elite demand that they did their part and need not pay their part for the common good...

They, the Controller of the Masses, offer us the distraction of a ball game... "Ave, Imperator, morituri te salutant"
