Portland Activists Denounce FBI Raids on Anti-war and Solidarity Activists

Concerned community members are meeting for a Speakout at Edith Green - Wendell Wyatt Federal Building (1220 SW 3rd Avenue, Downtown Portland, Oregon) on Friday, October 1 4:00pm - 6:00pm.
On Friday, September 24, 2010, the Federal Bureau of Investigation carried out sweeps across the Midwest. The FBI raided seven houses and an office in Chicago and Minneapolis, and agents handed subpoenas to testify before a federal grand jury to eleven activists in Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. The FBI also attempted to intimidate activists in California and North Carolina.

According to Colombia Solidarity activist, Tom Burke:
"The government hopes to use a grand jury to frame up activists. The goal of these
raids is to harass and try to intimidate the movement against U.S. wars and
occupations, and those who oppose U.S. support for repressive regimes."

Locally, a diverse group of activists in Portland are organizing to fight back. On Friday October 1st, one week after the raids, we will come together to denounce the FBI's harassment of anti-war and solidarity activists. The This suppression of civil rights is aimed at those who dedicate their time and energy to supporting the struggles of the Palestinian and Colombian peoples against U.S. funded occupation and war. The FBI has indicated that the grand jury is investigating the activists for possible material support of terrorism charges. We ask ourselves, who is next?

It is important to remember that political repression is nothing new, especially to Black and Muslim persons. "Martin Luther King was considered a communist by the FBI and was heavily watched and that sort of repression continues today under the PATRIOT ACT, " says local political prisoners activist Adam Carpinelli. Portland local Patrice Lumumba Ford currently is serving an 18 year sentence on false conspiracy charges as part of the government's "War on Terror".

We come together to demand the US government:
Stop the repression against anti-war and international solidarity activists.
Immediately return all confiscated materials: computers, cell phones, papers, documents, etc.
End the grand jury proceedings against anti-war activists.

The raids were not on "anti-war activists" they were on authoritarian Maoists & Stalinists. The organization is called Freedom Road Socialist Organization - Fight Back (frso.org). They're supporters of North Korea, FARC, Hezbollah, Leninist vanguardism, and they uphold Joseph the butcher Stalin as one of their "principle theorists". They even consider China to be a real communist country! To call them merely anti-war activists is deceptive. I think we should all oppose state repression but, as an anarchist I am not gonna show solidarity with an organization that would surely have me killed if they were powerful enough to do so. Fuck the state and it's police, and fuck the authoritarian state-capitalist FRSO!

Last Friday's national "terrorism" raids against antiwar activists continue to dominate conversation in the Twin Cities social justice community. On Monday, over 200 people rallied outside the FBI building at Marquette and Washington in downtown Minneapolis (see photos from TC Daily Planet), and Thursday evening will be the formative meeting at Walker Church for a solidarity committee to defend those investigated for alleged "material support of terrorism."

Petition Text:

To: President Barack Obama, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder

**Stop the repression against anti-war and international solidarity activists.

**Immediately return all confiscated materials: computers, cell phones, papers, documents, etc.

**End the grand jury proceedings against anti-war activists.

I am writing to demand justice and an end to the FBI's continued harassment of antiwar and international solidarity activists, activists who are guilty of no crime but opposition to U.S. foreign policy. On Friday, September 24, 2010 the FBI raided seven houses and an office in Chicago and Minneapolis. The FBI served subpoenas to testify before a federal grand jury to 13 activists in Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. The FBI also attempted to intimidate activists in California, Wisconsin and North Carolina. This is not the action of a lone prosecutor. The raids were coordinated nationally, spanned several cities, and many other activists have been visited and personally threatened by the FBI.

The FBI confiscated computers, email and mailing lists, cell phones , cameras, videos, books, and passports. This is a dangerous attack on the constitutional rights of free speech of every social justice, antiwar and human rights activist and organization in the U.S. today. The right to speak, meet and write opinions is guaranteed under the constitution.

This suppression of civil rights is aimed at those who dedicate their time and energy to supporting the struggles of the Palestinian and Colombian peoples against U.S. funded occupation and war. Grand Jury subpoenas investigating material support of terrorism are being used to silence highly respected and well known human rights activists. This is a dangerous national effort to shut down growing opposition to U.S. wars. It cannot be allowed.

The FBI and the Grand Jury are threatening courageous individuals who have written and spoken publicly to broaden understanding of social justice issues of war and occupation. The activists are involved with many groups, including: the Twin Cities Anti-War Committee, the Palestine Solidarity Group, the Colombia Action Network, Students for a Democratic Society, and Freedom Road Socialist Organization. These activists came together with many others to organize the 2008 anti-war marches on the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.

The FBI and the U.S. government must end this campaign of intimidation against anti-war and international solidarity activists. I am outraged at this disrespect of democratic rights. I ask that you intervene immediately to:

**Stop the repression against anti-war and international solidarity activists.

**Immediately return all confiscated materials: computers, cell phones, papers, documents, etc.

**End the grand jury proceedings against anti-war activists.

Sincerely,
(Your signature will be appended here based on the contact information you enter in the form above)

Personally I don't care what the politics of the specific targeted activists are, if the FBI raided them simply because they have international ties to resistance movements, then I am in the same boat as them. If you hadn't noticed, they do exactly this kind of shit to Anarchists all the time. And they love it when we find no common ground with each other.

On Friday, September 24, 2010,
the Federal Bureau of Investigation
carried out sweeps across the Midwest.

The FBI raided seven houses and an office in Chicago and Minneapolis, and agents handed subpoenas to testify before a federal grand jury to eleven activists in Illinois, Minnesota, and Michigan. The FBI also attempted to intimidate activists in California and North Carolina.

Subpoenaed Chicago activist, Tom Burke:
"The government hopes to use a grand jury to frame up activists. The goal of these
raids is to harass and try to intimidate the movement against U.S. wars and
occupations, and those who oppose U.S. support for repressive regimes."

Raided Minneapolis activist, Steff Yorek:
"We believe the FBI is targeting and investigating people for their ideas. We think we have the right to this political speech. You don't have to agree with our conclusions and ideas about these international movements, or even oppose the war, to agree that being targeted for those views is wrong and a dangerous attack on our civil liberties."
"This is an outrageous fishing expedition"

Apparently the Israeli Defense Force was using the "Institute of Terrorism Research and Response" (ITRR) who were reporting back to Jerusalem on the POTA camp in DC that i attended

Here is the article that speaks of this connection:

When I went to DC in March 2010 for the Peace of the Action event and for the M19 anti war march the ITRR was operantly concerned unbeknown to any of us at the time.
