The Rally and Pioneer Square featured speakers from the African American and Latino Communities, religious institutions, Portland Mental Health Association of Portland, Portland Copwatch, a former State Senator and a present State Representative, and others.|
After the Rally, the gathering carried their message through the streets of Portland, ending up at City Hall for two more brief speeches.
I've selected two speakers, though all of them spoke eloquently and passionately about the need for police reform. Many, if not all, mentioned names of those whose lives have been needlessly cut short by the aggressive and short sighted actions of the Portland Police Department.
All demanded change, and some spoke of impending State legislation, calling for a February rally in Salem. Oregon State Representative Lew Frederick mentioned that he had recently submitted bills aimed at curbing the use of excessive force and modifying their training procedures.
Featured in the six minute video are Dr. T. Allan Bethel, President of the Albina Ministerial Alliance, and Andrew Barney, a Reed college student.
