Camp Phoenix Rising Faces Eviction Again

The city wants to shut us down. Depending on what happens after today, Phoenix Rising could be no more if the police have their way. Please come out to the site around 10 am to get more info about strategy and hear the full story about what we're up against. We need your help more now than ever!

We're planning a protest tomorrow at the site when the cops show up (which they said they would). The camp has reached a pivotal moment in its young history. Read our post on our blog and spread the word!

Update at 4pm from Phoenix Rising camp 11.Sep.2010 19:50

Joe Anybody iam@joe-anybody.com

Campers were all heading off into the day ...the 10 there, were all branching out
Not sure if any are coming back?

It was sad to see them all trying to get a bearing on what they were going to do, where to go, where can I sleep?

There was ad-hock last minute advise session, with everyone sharing their knowledge of the city's ever changing messed up confusing laws, when you could have a blanket, where you could sit, is camping OK or not on a sidewalk. It was a mess of ideas and no tangible resources or ways to get the correct answers. The conversation provided no solid information. It was a frustrating mystery.

And where they were going was a mystery too, even as they walked .... they didn't know.

One thing they did know, but didn't talk allot about.... The cops would be looking for em!
It wasn't a good feeling.
It made me constantly look over my shoulder

One man was in a wheel chair with a broken foot
Two were ladies
One nice man looked as if he was senior citizen
One man pulled a wagon filled with what he owned

There was a man who didn't want to be photographed due to worry that he may be singled out as "A homeless camper from the camp"
The small group said the police had stopped by sometime around 2 and said they would be back
When I left at 4Pm only the elderly man was left sitting on a bucket behind the pallet make shift barricade

A reporter from The Mercury was there
He was very kind to take a backpack of personal belongings for safe keeping until Monday, whereupon he will drop it off at Sisters of the Road, for the guy in the wheel chair who cant carry it, now that he is forced to move on.

The camp was totally in no ones way, this is a stupid selfish move based on bad law, rather than human or civil rights.
(not to mention some empathy and compassion)
But due to the cold-heart of the city, they would rather pay to enforce the removal of "Phoenix Rising " than to assist with the dignity and the safety and survival of these citizens who "are part of" this city.

The police are enforcing the cities fucked up "blackberry bushes overgrown-lot / street" as their property.
With the attitude of "get off of our property or we will arrest you"

This was sad to be witnessing

The camp and tent sites were "picked up" and the tents were down by the time I arrived.
There were no police there at the camp in the hour I was there.
The pallets were stacked all along the front to form a makeshift barricade or simulate a barrier

The folks there were very limited in what they could take with them, it was only what they could carry at the time
Some things will have to be left behind

The city can not be concerned nor are they.

Very nice people, very unfortunate to see this have to go down like this.
