Freedom Eroding In America

The erosion of American freedoms did not end with the Bush administration. The slow descent into fascism that Naomi Wolf warned about in 2007* continues under Obama as well. This article lists some of the more recent ominous indications, and provides informative links. * http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/apr/24/usa.comment
On July 12th, it was reported in the mainstream media that U.S. Marines are working directly with the Los Angeles Police Department on the streets of South Central L.A. We're told that the L.A.P.D. is tasked with teaching the Marines how to win over the "hearts and minds" of Afghanis by means of "exercises" on the streets of the "homeland." [1] The mainstream media, however, did not seem to find it at all troubling that the military was "embedding" with police in a major U.S. city, with U.S. citizens in the "exercise" as the "enemy."

"Justified" by the April 20th Gulf Oil Disaster, which has spewed about 2 million gallons of toxic "crude" into the Gulf every day for almost three months, on Independence Day, July 4, 2010, the public sandy beach in Panama City, Florida was patrolled by military jeeps.[2]

It seems that Americans are becoming more and more accustomed - and conditioned - to seeing military troops deployed in public areas, like streets and beaches.

Sacramento, California currently seeks what the city government calls "water conservation ambassadors" in Sacramento neighborhoods. "...city officials want residents to do more than just pick up the phone and report water wasters..." the July 10, 2010 article in the Bee reads.[3] This idea seems benign at first glance; the city is merely seeking to recruit "volunteers" to "educate and survey" their neighbors about their water use, and then return the "survey" to the city. But the very concept - of any government seeking to enlist residents to watch and question their neighbors about what they are doing and then report back to the government about it - should be repugnant to anyone valuing liberty.[4]

In Arizona, recently passed legislation makes "failure to carry proof of citizenship a crime." "With this law, a person who is a legal citizen of the United States (even born here) could be walking on foot... stopped by the police, asked for documentation of their citizenship, and then detained. [if they fail to produce it]."[5] Well-paid talk-show propagandists assure their listeners that Arizona SB1070 merely targets "illegal immigrants", while in reality this unconstitutional legislation places in jeopardy the rights and freedoms of all of us. Arizona SB1070 empowers Arizona police to disregard the "probable cause" safeguard as specified in the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. SB1070 assumes possible guilt because of appearance alone, and forces people to "prove their innocence" or else be charged with a crime. Thus, SB1070 is not an "immigration law" as it has been deceptively described, but is a direct attack on the presumption of innocence[6] upon which our entire legal system is based, an upon which much of our freedom depends. It is "the foot in the door" for forcing all of us to have to "show our papers" on demand by authorities. We are not presumed guilty until proven innocent in America!

Many states now have similar bills awaiting passage in order to force their populations to "show their papers" on demand, as Arizona is currently doing. In spite of incessant media propaganda in favor of this totalitarian legislation, many Americans are aware and are standing up for the Constitution and against racial profiling. There are other ways to solve border and citizenship issues which are in accordance WITH the Constitution. There is national resistance against this law and others like it. Google "Boycott Arizona."

On April 7, 2010, Glenn Greenwald reported in an article entitled "Confirmed: Obama Authorizes Assassination of U.S. Citizen" that "the Obama White House has now expressly authorized the CIA to kill [American citizen Anwar] al-Alwaki no matter where he is found, no matter his distance from a battlefield." As Greenwald states: "...this American citizen will now be murdered by the CIA because Barack Obama has ordered that it be done. What kind of person could possibly justify this or think that this is a legitimate government power?"[7]

In a March 19, 2010 article, Liliana Segura reported that "On March 4, 2010, Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman introduced a bill called the 'Enemy Belligerent Interrogation, Detention, and Prosecution Act of 2010' that, if passed, would set this country on a course to become a military dictatorship."[8] This bill - S.3081 - authorizes the government to detain any persons defined as "unprivileged enemy belligerents" indefinitely, "without criminal charges and without trial."[9] McCain and Lieberman both took an Oath to "support and defend the Constitution" when they became senators; their introducing of the totalitarian bill S.3081 clearly violates that Oath.[10] Why is this not reported, and why does their continued suitability to hold public office go unquestioned?

Freedom of movement is gradually being more curtailed. There are currently over 80,000 names on the Terrorist Security Administration's "No-Fly List" and about ten names are added every day. [11] In 2004, U.S. Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy's name appeared on the government's "No-Fly List'" and he was not allowed to board his flight until cleared by a "supervisor."[12] On June 30, 2010, the American Civil Liberties Union "sued the U.S. government, alleging that it had violated the constitutional rights of ten U.S. citizens or legal residents by placing them on the "No-Fly"... list..."[13] The price of a U.S. passport increased by 47% on July 13, 2010.[14] There is an "800 Mile Wall" currently under construction between the U.S. and Mexico, which severely restricts the freedom of movement of wildlife and humans alike.[15] The G20 Summit met in Toronto, Canada, on June 24-26. On June 23, 2010, law-abiding CODEPINK activist Medea Benjamin was detained for over 48 hours and then denied entry into Canada.[16] On June 24, 2010, peaceful American activists Luke Rudkowski, Matt Lebacek and Kelley McCarthy were held for five hours before being denied entry into Canada.[17]
