CRASHING THE NAFTA EXPANDERS' BALL
Oregonians Need Jobs, Not More Job-Killing Trade Agreements!

Earlier this year, freshman Congressman Kurt Schrader angered his constituents by being the only member of Oregon's Congressional delegation to sign onto a letter calling on President Obama to push forward with Free Trade Agreements that were negotiated by the Bush administration but never submitted for a vote in Congress.
In late June, President Obama shocked people across the nation by saying he plans to submit the job-killing Korea Free Trade Agreement for a vote after the election. This Bush-negotiated, business-as-usual trade pact is the biggest Free Trade Agreement since NAFTA itself and dwarfs the size of any trade measure President Bush was ever able to get passed. It represents the exact polar opposite of President Obama's campaign promises for trade reform.
We need to make sure that Congressman Schrader and the Obama administration understand that Oregon won't put up with any more old-model trade agreements that ship local jobs overseas. Oregon lost nearly 10,000 jobs to offshoring in 2009 alone, according to U.S. Labor Department certifications; it now has an official unemployment rate of 10.6%. The Korea Free Trade Agreement would only make things worse.
"We need a massive jobs program, not more of the same failed trade policies of George Bush," said Laurie King, Chair of the Economic Crisis Committee of Portland Jobs with Justice. "I can't believe that Democrats are pushing this stuff when things are so bad for working people in Oregon."
On Thursday, July 8, Vice President Joe Biden is attending a fundraising reception for Congressman Schrader at the swank Tiffany Center in downtown Portland. Vice President Biden is the highest ranking Obama administration official to ever visit Oregon since taking power, and is possibly the first to visit since the President's Korea FTA announcement. Please join us for leafleting, an informational picket and other assorted fun as guests enter the fundraiser starting at 10:45 am that morning.
We need to send a strong message to our local representatives, including Congressman Schrader (who said he opposes extending unemployment benefits), that their job is to serve the working people who elected them, not the multinational corporations that benefit from unfair trade policies. Only with your help can we stop this outrageous NAFTA expansion, and prevent President Obama from making a terrible and costly mistake.
