The TransAlta coal plant is the largest single source of carbon-dioxide, mercury and nitrogen-oxide pollution in Washington State. Coal pollution has been linked to brain damage, heart disease, lung disease, cancer and stroke.
Currently, Governor Gregoire and the Department of Ecology are in negotiations with the TransAlta coal company to determine a pathway off of coal. Environmental, public health and faith organizations in Washington, however, have expressed concern that the Governor's negotiations are not considering the opinions of the people that must suffer the effects of the hazardous pollution emitted from the TransAlta coal plant.
The Earth Week Town Halls are being organized to allow people in Washington the opportunity to register their comments on the issue and ask Governor Gregoire to insist that TransAlta phase out dirty and dangerous coal-fired power as soon as possible.
