The TransAlta coal plant is the largest single source of carbon-dioxide, mercury and nitrogen-oxide pollution in Washington State. Coal pollution has been linked to brain damage, heart disease, lung disease, cancer and stroke.

Currently, Governor Gregoire and the Department of Ecology are in negotiations with the TransAlta coal company to determine a pathway off of coal. Environmental, public health and faith organizations in Washington, however, have expressed concern that the Governor's negotiations are not considering the opinions of the people that must suffer the effects of the hazardous pollution emitted from the TransAlta coal plant.
The Earth Week Town Halls are being organized to allow people in Washington the opportunity to register their comments on the issue and ask Governor Gregoire to insist that TransAlta phase out dirty and dangerous coal-fired power as soon as possible.

Presenters include:
Ted Nace - Author of Climate Hope: On the Front Lines of the Fight Against Coal

Doug Howell - Director of the Sierra Club's Coal-Free Northwest campaign

Maye Thompson - Environmental Health Program Director for Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility

Cager Clabaugh - Local Labor Leader

WHERE: Water?Resources Education Center, 4600 SE Columbia Way, Vancouver, WA 98661

WHEN: Wednesday , April 21, 2010. 7:00 PM

Town Hall Meetings will also be held in Seattle, Redmond and Bainbridge Island, WA.
