Walkable communities in the U.S.?

are other people who primarily walk as transport happy with any cities towns or communites around the U.S. they'd recommend?
I'm trying mostly to find these features: 1. big enough yards or acreages available to have a degree of self sufficient garden (for a low cost or possibly shared). 2. near a diverse enough urban center to not draw stares and provocation for any style of dress or hair 3. near enough to walk to a large wilderness area at least the size of forest park, more ideally a national forest

Port Townsend and Santa Cruz both resemble what you are looking for, but both places are primarily home for rich yuppies. I guess you can't have everything you want without making it completely yourself.
