CONTACT REPRESENTATIVES EARL BLUMENAUER AND DAVID WU TO SPEAK OUT ABOUT BRAD WILL'S MURDER AND JUAN MANUEL'S RAILROADING AND DETENTION.
You may have heard about the murder of Indymedia journalist Brad Will by paramilitary forces in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2006, and the subsequent frameup of several activists by the Mexican government. One of those activists, Juan Manuel Martinez Moreno, is still in prison despite multiple judges having ruled that there was insufficient evidence (ie. NO EVIDENCE AT ALL) to charge him with Brad's murder.
Meanwhile, the paramilitary forces which were CAUGHT ON TAPE SHOOTING BRAD remain free.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE BEFORE JANUARY 11th AND URGE THEM TO CALL THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT AND THE US STATE DEPARTMENT TO DEMAND THAT JUAN MANUEL BE RELEASED ON JANUARY 11th AS ORDERED BY THE JUDGE.
*Please take a moment to contact Rep. Earl Blumenauer and Rep. David Wu to urge them to speak out about Brad Will's murder and Juan Manuel Martínez Moreno's railroading and detention.
*Also ask them to look into and speak out about the many human rights abuses and the over 20 Mexican citizens that were also murdered in Oaxaca, around the same time as Brad.
*Tell them any further Plan Mexico/Merida Initiative funding should be stopped until Brad Will's and others' cases showing impunity of Mexican security forces for serious human rights abuses are
satisfactorily resolved. Let them know that the unjust frame up and arrest of Juan Manuel is not a satisfactory resolution. Please mention that you have these same concerns regarding other countries
receiving money from the U.S. under the Merida initiative.
*Let them know that you want a written response to your call/letter/email outlining what they will do to respond to the case of Juan Manuel, and how they will work to ensure justice for the murder of Brad Will. Also ask for their position on the Merida Initiative/Plan Mexico, and whether they are willing to demand that funding for the initiative be made contingent on the Mexican government's willingness to end its human rights abuses, particularly against social justice activists, and stop granting immunity to death squads and paramilitaries which kill and threaten activists.
