My pick for political quote of the year goes to Illinois senator Dick Durbin. I like Dick Durbin--he's a liberal Democrat who has been outspoken against the Bush admin. in the past.
But this quote does a good job of being representative of the thin gruel we've been fed so far by the party in power, when it comes to differentiating itself from the policies of the Bush admin., especially on issues of torture and foreign policy, and "war on terror."
Speaking in November about the prospect of the majority of Guantanamo detainees being sent to a rural prison in Illinois, Durbin said:
"This is an opportunity to dramatically reduce unemployment, create thousands of good-paying jobs and breathe new economic life into this part of downstate Illinois."
