Red and Black Cafe Seeks Community Support, Low-Interest Loans

The Red and Black Cafe is still seeking small, low-interest loans in order to finish repaying the expenses associated with our 2008 move. Please read the article for further information.
Dear friends and allies of the Red & Black Cafe,

As 2009 draws to a close, we look forward to celebrating winter holidays with our community (we will be open limited hours! Come warm up with a hot apple chai!) and welcoming the new year.

January also marks our 2nd anniversary in our new Buckman location (stay tuned for details about our anniversary event!). As this milestone approaches, we are pleased to announce that our worker-owned, collectively-managed cafe and community space is surviving and thriving.

Since we reopened at 400 SE 12th Avenue in 2008, we have acquired a beer & wine license and a brand new beer cooler, upgraded our kitchen equipment, hired several talented new worker-owners, improved our all-vegan (and increasingly local and organic) menu, sold untold amounts of coffee and black dragon noodles, and hosted lots of film screenings, music shows, and benefits for community organizations.

With each passing month, business has improved. We have also made adjustments due to the economic recession and the increased expenses associated with our move. We have learned to operate our business more efficiently. We feel confident that we will be able to provide empowering jobs, delicious vegan food, and a welcoming community space for years to come.

However, we are still facing financial hurdles. We re-opened on a shoestring budget and we are still recovering from the costs of renovating and equipping our new space, training new staff, and renewing our licenses.

So we are asking our community for support!

If you have the means, please consider investing in the Red & Black Cafe. Even small loans of $300+ are helpful. We have been in business for over 9 years (the average restaurant goes out of business in less than 3!), survived a move, and have a perfect loan repayment history. We are happy to pay reasonable interest rates on small personal loans, and we are willing to negotiate terms that suit your needs.

If you are unable to loan us money but you have $5 burning a hole in your pocket, please consider stopping by for a hearty snack, an organic fair trade coffee or tea, or a local microbrew! Also, please consider buying Red & Black Cafe GIFT CERTIFICATES as holiday gifts! Gift certificates will be available at the cafe later this week!

Please e-mail  rachel_anne@riseup.net if you would like to discuss making a loan.

Thank you friends! We appreciate your support!

Sincerely,
The Red & Black Collective
