Legal Question

Police records.
I am trying to get a police record from local law enforcement regarding an assault. I know the date, time and location of assault but not the parties involved. Can I get a copy of the report or review it? I called the police department and the were very vague. I got the impression I can't see it. Also do I have to pay for it or state my reason for wanting to see it?

not legal advise

You can check with the "record department" in the Downtown Justice center building on 3rd street
It may be up the 10th or 6th floor go in through the doors by the steps
they have a whole department for this
you should not have anything of concern in your pockets when you go inside

I think you can view the record for free
its a public record
I dont you need to explain why
Or you can buy a copy for yourself... they make a Xerox
(5 to 10 Bucks I think)

Its been a long time since I had to do this
It may not have the officers report, but the offical record will be there
*Im not sure if Im quoting this right but you might have to request the officers report seperatly?
Probably something a lawyer does all the time... but for some reason i think* they dont hand it freely

helps

If you are interested in Portland Police Bureau records and reports, visit this webpage:

If you are talking about another agency, try a Google search with the name of that agency in quotes and the words "police report" in quotes. It shouldn't be too hard to find what you are looking for, but it will probably cost you a few bucks.

Good luck.
