Missippi - Oaxacan Woman Loosing Child because she does not speak English

Basics from Times article:

"... Baltazar Cruz speaks only Chatino, barely any Spanish and no English. Last November, she went to Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Miss., where she lives, to give birth to a baby girl, Rubí. According to documents obtained by the Mississippi Clarion-Ledger, the hospital called the state Department of Human Services (DHS), which ruled that Baltazar Cruz was an unfit mother in part because her lack of English "placed her unborn child in danger and will place the baby in danger in the future."

"Rubí was taken from Baltazar Cruz, who now faces deportation."

CIRILA BALTAZAR'S DAUGHTER HAS BEEN PLACED WITH A MISSIPPI FAMILY.
A campaign to assist this woman is currently underway, I'll post the information when available.

The next court date is November 18, 2009
Jackson County Youth Court
4903 Telephone Rd
Pascagoula, MS 39567
228-696-6501

In a letter to the court, Centro Binacional para el Desarrollo Indigena Oaxaqueno (CBDIO) stated:

"You have to take into account the cultural and social factors that contextualize this case. The treatment of an indigenous migrant, where there are more than 12 million persons without documents in the United States, who are here only looking to gain a life. Their migratory state should not be a motive to take her daughter away."

"Please reconsider the decision by the court, permit Cirila Baltazar to be represented by an Chatino interpreter and allow her to be represented by a lawyer. Please return to Crilia, her daughter, Rubi Juana Mendez Baltazar.

Other groups assisting are:

Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
