On July 25, 2009, as part of a Global Day of Action With Iran, a rally of solidarity with the Iranian people was held in Pioneer Square in downtown Portland.

The event was moderated by Iranian American Goudarz Eghtedari, Ph.D., who after a few brief comments introduced the guest speakers.

I didn't tape all the speakers, but here is a list of those who appear in the program.
Rev. Kate Lore, First Unitarian Church
Martin Gonzales, Latin America Solidarity Activist and PPS Board member
Hala Gores, Palestinian American
Dr. Catherine Thomason, Physicians for Social Responsibility
Mazen Malek, Palestinians United
Tom Hastings, Portland State University
Mayor Sam Adams

Besides these speakers, a Resolution by Sam Adams was read declaring that day an official Portland day of Solidarity with the people of Iran.

The video is about 30 minutes in length. Many of the speakers urge Americans to support the Iranian people in their struggle, emphasizing that it is their struggle, and that all we can do is encourage them and emulate their strength and determination.

gee, uh, thanks 09.Sep.2009 19:07

Wow, um, thanks jim, for helping to spread government propaganda ala 1997-ish anti-Taliban crap on college campuses encouraging people to "stand with" the "people" of Afghanistan. (Meaning oil companies.) Or 2000-ish anti-Sadam crap urging people to "stand with" the "people" of Iraq. Or go back farther, and remember those grass-rootsy mystery Arab women asking us to "stand with" those poor, poor "people" of Kuwait, whose babies were allegedly unplugged from incubators....

Wow. Who will we "stand with" next? Whoever it is better duck.
