Red and Black Café Communique
7/31/09

This is the eighth communication from the Booking Committee of the Red and Black Café! There are a ton of things happening this month, so please see the calendar for a full listing of events. Also, please note that right now our projector and we really need to raise funds to buy a new one. Come on by and eat a sandwich! And stay cool - it's hot out there!

BENEFIT FOR THE ELLIOT FREE STATE 27 // 8.1

This show will be a benefit to raise funds for the legal defense of the Elliot Free State 27. It will include a slideshow presented by the folks at Cascadia Rising Tide, plus music from Here Comes Trouble and The Rising Phoenix Society. Come dance your butt off and support a good cause. For more information on the Elliott Free State, go to: forestdefensenow.org.

GAME NIGHT! // 8.4

Do you like board games? You know you do. This is just a reminder that the FIRST TUESDAY of EVERY MONTH is game night, where you can play any of the games we have at the café or bring your own. Relax with a cool drink and play some Trivial Pursuit!

SERVICE INDUSTRY NIGHT AT THE RED AND BLACK! // 8.5

Everyone already knows that Wednesday is WORKER WEDNESDAY for card-carrying union members and paid staff at co-ops. It is now also Service Industry Night! From 7pm-close every Wednesday, workers in the service industry get the same discount - $1 off pints and $3 off pitchers. The last Wednesday of the month, SIN night will be hosted by the Portland Restaurant Workers Association (PRWA). Come check it out!

MUSIC: MCDOUGALL, PLUS MORE TBA // 8.8

You may know him as one half of the Stumptown Strugglers, who are f'ing incredible, but McDougall's solo music is equally mind-blowing. You will have fun at this show! Other acts are TBA at this time.

BENEFIT FOR THE REALLY REALLY FREE MARKET // 8.13

The Really Really Free Market happens on the last Saturday of every month at the Terry Schrunk Plaza downtown. Their P.A. got stolen, so we're going to try to raise some money for them in time for the RRFM in August! Come enjoy some music by Typwrytrs and other great local artists, and throw down some cashola.

MUSIC: ROOTS N' RUCKUS, KATE MANN, SLOW TEETH // 8.15

Roots N' Ruckus is a supergroup of sorts from the East Coast, guaranteed to blow your mind. They're on tour, so come support them! Give 'em a little gas money. Local artist Kate Mann, and Red and Black favorites Slow Teeth will also be playing.

BARRY SANDERS READING: THE GREEN ZONE // 8.16

Even if every car disappeared and we all instantly became more sustainable, we would still be heading towards environmental collapse due to... the military! Says Barry Sanders. This book has some facts that will make you very upset. It just came out on AK Press, so come on down to hear Barry do a brief reading and talk about the book!

BENEFIT FOR THE PORTLAND IWW // 8.27

The Portland IWW needs to raise some money! There will be music by Tansy & Tarweed and more acts TBA, as well as someone to speak a little bit about the IWW, and a literature table. Our café was originally started by members of the IWW and several of our workers are members. Come show some solidarity!

This is definitely not ALL of the events happening! Please check our Myspace page for more details (myspace.com/redandblackcafe) and/or check out the printed calendars in the café and all over town!

In solidarity,
Red and Black Café
