Looming danger: not enough respirators for H1N1 blowback
Dear Hon. Sen. Wyden (and Health staff),
As you know, the H1N1 pandemic has been identified as a close variant of the 1918 influenza, which killed 20 million worldwide. The virus "strategy" is to spread very widely in a first wave (currently in process), then to return in the Northern Hemisphere Fall as an efficiently recombined mutant with virulence due to "passaging." Preparation must reflect the paucity of hospital beds and, specifically, the lack of respirators for those recovering. If (as is typical) 30% of the Portland Metro area is infected and 1% of those require hospitalization, the hospitals will be hit with 3,000 serious cases, and hundreds (at least) will die due to inaccessible care. Equipment and human resources must be put into place now; volunteers must be found and drilled.
Yours against catastrophe
