Police Liberate Animals from Scamps Pet Store

On Friday, April 10th, Salem Police and Willamette Humane Society responded to a report of animal neglect at the Scamps Pet Center located inside Salem's Lancaster Mall.
Officials liberated 2 dogs and a rabbit from Scamps who were found to be living in poor health conditions. Store manager Laura Lien, 59, was cited for animal neglect. Scamps Pet Center at the Lancaster Mall is now being investigated.

"There are times in the morning when I can hear the animals, and it sounds like they're crying, through the wall," said Justin Tocher, who works nearby. "I don't know how well they're taken care of."

Googling "Scamps Pet Center" reveals many negative comments on different websites from former employees and shoppers. One has to wonder how Scamps has survived this long.

"My kids always wanna go in there and it's honestly depressing," said a local shopper from Lancaster Mall. "Most of the time the cages need to be cleaned because puppies are playing or even eating I've witnessed their own poo. Most don't have water and are confined in such a small space. I've also always wondered if anyone really pays as much as they try and charge for animals. I'm happy someone has stepped in. Hopefully they get shut down!"

Tracy Lee, a former employee of Scamps in Corvallis, Albany and Eugene says, "I'm not surprised that there are only 6 stores left of the dozens that were in business when I worked for them. Yes, they were known for buying from puppy and kitten mills, and a number of animals would die while in the shop. I remember the mutant American Eskimo with the paw growing out of it's chest."

The Humane Society and the Department of Agriculture will continue the investigation.
"If more information surfaces, there may be additional counts," said Salem Police Lt. Dave Okada.

You MEAN?

Does that mean that Matt Rossell might actually be a good citizen, and not some kind of crazed terrorist after all? Does that mean that maybe, just maybe, the hopped up security guard at Lloyd center mall who arrested Matt outside Scamps might have been on the... WRONG SIDE? I mean, since Matt was only there to educate the public about the abuse and neglect perpetrated by Scamps and their puppy mills, and since we now KNOW, as a matter of public record and criminal law, that Matt was RIGHT about Scamps, could it be that the security guard (who admitted supporting puppy mills by buying a puppy mill puppy from Scamps himself) was in the wrong? Say it ain't so.

I used to work there...DO NOT SUPPORT SCAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!! 03.May.2009 22:34

I know the ins and outs of this company. I worked at a Scamps Pet Center for 2 years. I was a great employee, however I constantly struggled with the humane perspective of having caged puppies and kittens. Now that being said, I did my best to keep a clean store. The company did not allow me to have more than one person on the floor at a time. Illegal as that is, I did my best. I couldn't just quit my job because I have three children and my husband was in school at the time. I know that Scamps get's their puppies from a couple select breeders. But they mass produce puppies of several different breeds and mixes. I do not believe anyone could give quality health care or comfort care to that many puppies. The corp. office of Scamps is in Portland, OR. They claim to truly care about the animals, but all they see are $$$. I did my best to care for each and every animal that came into my store.

When did you work for Scamps? What location(s)? Where were these puppy mills located that Scamps purchased from? Hope you take the time to respond.
