Terminate Financing for Cars, Trucks, and SUVs that Pollute.

One of the outcomes of automaker reform must be a different mix of vehicles on the road. Higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions are non-negotiable.
But as long as buying a big fuel burner is cheap and easy, there's little financial incentive other then transient high gas prices for consumers to change behaviors.

Therefore, passenger vehicle financing must undergo total reform. It *MUST* be in alignment with Global Warming emission reduction goals.

The vehicles with the lowest emissions profiles *MUST* be the ones with the most favorable financing terms. And vehicles with the worst emissions profiles, must not receive any financing whatsoever.

Of course a better approach would be to offer favorable financing only for zero emissions vehicles and to deny it for all other vehicles. Making exceptions only as appropriate and consistent with sound public policy.

Yes Car Free is good. THe link actually mentions one type of electric vehicle. The point is to make available vehicles which actually are suitable for whatever the transportation needs are. Augmenting human power with electric drive is appropriate.

The issue with automobile "replacements" 01.Apr.2009 09:55

is that if you make an electric vehicle for "special trips" or "unique circumstances" then surpisingly, all trips become special, and all circumstances become unique. This is the nature of people. we didn't become the fattest nation on the planet by mere merit.

since we are a society, not merely a group of individuals, guidelines that shape society are needed to prevent sprawl, reclaim farmland, preserve wilderness and perpetuate harmony.

By putting such effort into decentralized transportation, we invite unmitigated growth. That's just not an option anymore. No more far-flung developments, no more massive freeways. Bring back the town square, pedestrian-friendly towns, and use sustainable methods for transportation.

they need you to buy their transportation

Human beings got along fine without cars for 25 hundred thousand years. We "need" cars because our civilization has been re-engineered during the last 65 years or so (.003% or that time) in order to keep people geographically separated and dependent on the machine.
