Red and Black Cafe Communique - March

March is upon us, comrades!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Red and Black Café Communique

2/28/09

March is upon us, comrades! There are many exciting things happening this month at the Red and Black; in particular, there are several benefits happening for people that really need your support. Show some solidarity and come out! Please note that all events start at 7pm unless otherwise noted. Also, not every event is listed here - consult the calendar for a complete list!

ELAW REPORTBACK BY CASCADIA RISING TIDE // 3.1.09

The Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW) gives public interest lawyers and scientists the training and resources they need to help communities protect the environment through law.

Cascadia Rising Tide will be doing a reportback on the annual L.A.W. conference that was held on February 26th at the University of Oregon.

RED AND BLACK GARDEN FUNDRAISER // 3.4.09

Our friends Olaf and Anna want to start a small collective of people to turn our raised bed gardens into a community garden! This will provide fresh produce for Food Not Bombs, as well as folks in the area who are hungry. But to do that, they'll need some funds and other resources like seeds, tools, etc.

Come show some solidarity and throw down a couple of bucks for the cause! There will also be music by the lovely and talented Hazel from The Dapper Cadavers.

PEACH-COLORED JUG SMUGGLERS! // 3.8.09

Everyone's favorite xvx Bay Area string band is coming back to the Red and Black! These kids are on tour, so come show them some love. Local Portland favorites, Tansy & Tarweed will be playing as well. You're gonna dance your butt off.

PRESENTATION BY THE RNC 8! // 3.11.09

Rob Czernik of the RNC 8 will be stopping through Portland to talk about their case and other topics of interest. This will be a benefit of sorts, as the RNC 8 need funds for their legal defense. There will also be music by The Dapper Cadavers, Portland's beloved jug-crust band.

QUEER MOVIE NIGHT CANCELLED THIS MONTH // 3.17.09

Kernan will be out of town, so Queer Movie Night is cancelled for this month. Sorry. It will be back in April!

PRESENTATION BY KEITH MCHENRY OF FOOD NOT BOMBS // 3.18.09

Join Keith McHenry, co-founder of Food Not Bombs for this wonderful presentation! It will explore the origins of FNB, as well as its principles of nonviolence and why the meals are always vegetarian/vegan. It should be an amazing night. See you there!

MICHAEL MUNK: THE RED GUIDE TO PORTLAND // 3.19.09

Michael Munk will be doing a presentation on his book, The Red Guide to Portland, which explores Portland's radical history. This event is co-sponsored by the Northwest History Network.

SPOKES PIZZA NIGHT IS BACK! // 3.25.09

Ahh, shit. We said, "one night only" the last time we did this. As it turns out, the last pizza night was really successful, so we may as well do it again! Delicious homemade vegan pizza straight from the recipe book of the old Spokes Pizza Collective (RIP) in Minneapolis. You know you want some, so come get some!

This will also be a benefit for the RNC8, who are suffering massive state repression and crazy legal defense fees for their involvement in First Amendment activity. Show some solidarity!

GREEN SCARE BENEFIT FEATURING LAUREN REGAN // 3.28.09

CLDC attorney Lauren Regan will be coming up from Eugene to talk about the Green Scare, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, its implications on activists, and more. Possibly featuring one other speaker. This will be a benefit for the AETA 4, four Santa Cruz activists that were recently arrested by the FBI and UC Berkeley police for their involvement in anti-vivisection demos last year.

Because we're trying to raise money for their legal defense, this event will be by donation but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Several groups will be tabling the event as well, so throw down a few dollars to help out some comrades in need.

PRISONER LETTER WRITING // 3.31.09

This happens the LAST TUESDAY of EVERY month. And guess what? We've even started giving you stamps to put on your letters. And you know what else? Write a letter to a prisoner and bring it to the counter worker, and we'll give you 10% off your purchase! WTF! We'll even mail the letter too, if you don't feel like it.

Basically, there's no excuse. Support political prisoners!

Keep an eye out for the printed calendars around town. You can't miss them. Also, we're now booking for April. Want to book an event? Email us at:  redandblackbooking@yahoo.com - and remember, the deadline is March 25th!

In Solidarity,
Red and Black Collective
