Former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich has been railroaded from office on the strength of illegal federal wiretaps and widespread media condemnation. The show trial in the Illinois state senate ending the twice-elected Democratic Governor's term in office was all but a foregone conclusion. The charges of trying to "sell" a senate seat were totally trumped up distortions of the governor's hard-nosed descriptions of not unusual political 'horse trading' that happens everyday in the business of politics.
Blago's real offense was this: daring to commit a taboo, equivalent in American politics, to grasping the third rail: he sided with striking workers and made the powerful threat to have the state of Illinois boycott the Bank of America, unless it used a tiny portion of its taxpayer bailout money to extend credit to Republic Windows of Illinois, the failing Illinois firm occupied by its workers shortly before the Blago "corruption" story broke *!
Here is the text of Blago's communiqué about the state of Illinois boycotting the Bank of America:
We have contacted all of our agencies across state government and as of right now, every agency has been ordered to suspend doing any business with the Bank of America. The Bank of America received $25 billion in taxpayer money as part of the financial bailout. This is exactly, precisely the kind of thing that isn't right -- when one the one hand, powerful special interests get the help of taxpayer money to bail them out -- the banks -- and yet the purpose of that money was supposed to be to provide a line of credit to businesses like this to keep workers working and keep people employed. And yet the Bank of America has yet to step up and say that they are going to be helpful to this company and keep these workers working. So unless and until they do that, we the state of Illinois will suspend doing any business with the Bank of America and we hope that this kind of leverage and pressure will encourage the Bank of America to do the right thing for this business, take some of that federal tax money that they received, and invest it by providing the necessary credit to this company so these workers can keep their jobs.
For the record, the statement appearing above is the genuine "crime" committed by the Illinois governor: standing up to eastern bankers on behalf of Illinois voters!
Note: Surveillance Tools Used to Eliminate Political Opposition
Blago becomes the second opposition party governor of a major US state removed from office thanks to illegal, warantless wiretaps by a Republican administration, after Eliot Spitzer of New York.
Footnote: This is now a modus operandi.
Next victim: Hamid Kharzai, puppet ruler of Afghanistan. US Network nightly news yesterday ran a piece about endemic corruption in Afghanistan. The writing would seem to be on the 'screen' for the former Unocal consultant, who had the 'ingratitude' to complain to the US about mounting civilian casualties in Afghanistan caused by NATO bombing raids, notably the bombing of wedding parties...
