Six people were arrested this morning for non-violent civil disobedience at the gates of Ft. Benning, in Georgia. Over 20,000 protesters, including dozens from Oregon, are gathered at the gates at the dates demanding the SOA be closed, and to commemorate six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter who where killed in El Salvador in 1989 and the other thousands murdered and tortured by killers who attended the School of the Americas. The school is now known as WHINSEC, and is still at Ft. Benning.
There is NO MENTION of this, the largest nonviolent protest and action this year, in the commercial media.
Help us spread the word locally by joining us today at 2 PM (Sunday, Nov 23) at Pioneer Square to pass out flyers and inform others of today's action and about the School of Americas.
Last year we came within 6 votes in the House for passing a bill to defund the School. We have a chance of getting president-elect Obama and the new congress to finish the job in 2009.
See our website www.soawpdx.org if you are interested in doing more locally, and see www.soaw.org for more information on the event in Georgia and the national movement.
