THE MORNING AFTER ELECTION DAY REBEL CITIZENS RECLAIM THE MEDIA THROUGH SUBVERSIVE ACTION
Thirty-Thousand USA Today Newspaper's Wrapped with "Special Edition" Cover, Courtesy of Anarchists in over 20 Cities Nationwide
WASHINGTON, DC - Disgusted with both the Republican and Democratic parties and their candidates for President - as well as the corporate owned and controlled media, rebel citizens took to the streets around the country to vote with their actions in the early morning of November 5. Thirty-thousand issues of USA Today were wrapped with a "special edition" cover with the headline "Capitalism Wins At the Polls - Anarchy Brews in the Streets". The "special edition" was wrapped around the Nov. 5 edition of USA Today and placed in newspaper boxes nation-wide.
Xavier Freeman, a participant in the action explained his perspective on the election: "As anarchists, we know that no election will ever lead to a significant change in the system that is enslaving and killing all life on this planet. We're still fighting to tear down the system that enslaves us; to destroy the death machine that is killing our planet — to create a world that embodies our best and highest dreams, dreams that will never fit into a ballot box."
Working under the banner "We are the change we've been waiting for" this special newspaper edition was distributed by anarchists around the country in cities such as Washington, D.C.; Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; Baltimore, MD; New York City, NY; Raleigh, NC; Minneapolis, MN; Denver, CO; Columbia, MO; New Orleans, LA; and numerous cities and towns across the country, including various towns within all of the "swing-states". Thirty-thousand copies of these subversive "special editions" were distributed around the country.
As stated in this special newspaper, anarchists believe in a state of freedom and equality outside of the domain of authoritarian power. "This de-centralized effort is a concrete example of anarchy in action, that is both symbolic and direct... " explained Amanda Heron, an anarchist plumber from Lancaster County, PA. Heron continues "It's a symbolic action in that it's a small display of what can be accomplished on a larger scale when ordinary people choose to act. But an action like this is also a direct action because it addresses a problem by fulfilling a need. The media in this country is biased and supports the status quo. Every person who picks up a copy of USA Today this morning that has this special cover will read a different view, a more truthful and honest take."
The "wrap" contains four pages, including articles on the ills of Capitalism; the horrible reality of the Prison Industrial-Complex; the Economic Crisis and the bailout entitled "This isn't a Bailout, This is a Stick-Up"; and a comic strip proposing solutions to issues such as housing foreclosures, and the privatization of the media. The paper concludes with the following call to action: "It's up to us to take matters into our own hands. The ones who created the crises are not going to solve them for us. No newspaper can tell you what you should do; you have to figure that out for yourself, with your friends and your neighbors." Following that text, the newspaper suggests several websites for people to obtain more information and resources. Some of those resources are also listed below:
