Oregon Convention Center!

What I Saw Tonight....
FYI-I've been participating tonight at the Oregon Convention Center, headquarters to the Democratic Party of Oregon's Election night 2008, where Barack Obama was announced our new President of the USA. Shook hands with several elected officials in tow. People by the hundreds trickled out into the streets thereafter, waving blue signs and untold numbers of cars honking with a huge media presence.

From there, I then proceeded to Pioneer Courthouse Square, where a night-time rally of a few hundred people gathered to sing "Star Spangled Banner" and chants of "No More Bush", "Yes We Can", and so forth. A fantastic drum played beautifully. A conga line of a few dozen temporarily was formed, with joyous dancing and glee. Again, huge media presence.

At this time, the current atmosphere on the streets is non-violent jubilation. People are crying openly, dancing, smiling and singing. Many couples are kissing and diverse cultures of all creeds included. One can easily sense that change indeed is on the horizon and hope restored for so many. What did others observe?

Now, may we begin the arduous, yet rewarding, healing work of a nation tomorrow, for tonight is pure celebration.

Respectfully Submitted,

Why would folks at a celebration of "non-violent jubilation" be singing a tribute to US imperialism and "bombs bursting in air"?

You can not start the healing until you stop the wounding.

Invasion of Iraq, Afghanistan, plans to invade Phakistan, 'war on drugs' war on the poor, the Bailout!
nuclear energy, 'clean' coal, CAFA, Biden Bankruptcy Bill, no health care, no moratorium on foreclosures, Homegrown Terrorism Act, FISA, AT&T immunity and the war on women:

WHAT KIND OF HEALING ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!?

am I the only one? 05.Nov.2008 10:11

Am I the only one who, while happy to see Barack Obama win the presidency, did not feel justified in all out 'celebration' last night? What are we celebrating? It is an amazing feat that Barack Obama was able to get himself elected in this country, but is he going to even address any of the real problems that face the people of this country and of the world? Is anything really going to change for the better, or are we just celebrating that things won't be as bad as they could have been? Like prisoners celebrating the hiring of a new warden who promises better meals and more yard time - it's nice, and it's better, but it doesn't change the reality of where you are.

no you're not the only one 05.Nov.2008 11:41

perhaps you live in a bubble?

fortunately i was in california over the last four days ... it was a silent, personal, rising tide for the people of color. they were holding their breaths with anticipation ... i too am an american, i belong in this country, i am hear, my sons and daughters are here.

to hear the newly elected president call for unity, caring for one another -- if you haven't noticed, this kind of language was systematically removed from the public debate for EIGHT LONG YEARS.

THIS IS A HISTORIC MOMENT IN THE HISTORY OF THE U.S.A. YES, WE ALL KNOW, INCLUDING OBAMA, THAT THINGS ARE FALLING APART EVERYWHERE, THIS IS GOOD. GET YOUR BUTT OUT THERE AND BECOME AN ACTIVIST. TAKE THE NEW OPPORTUNITY, THAT IS NOT THAT OBAMA WAS ELECTED [THOUGH I CANNOT HELP BUT CRY WITH JOY THAT AMERICANS HAVE WOKEN UP!!!]

WE ARE ON THE PRECIPICE OF MANY NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO EFFECT CHANGE. AND IF YOU CANNOT SEE IT, YOU NEED TO MOVE TO ANOTHER STATE WHERE YOU ARE NOT SURROUNDED BY YOUNG-WHITE PEOPLE WHOM PERHAPS IN HISTORY WILL BE KNOWN AS THE "HOODIES" -- the ones that took joy in a good street battle with the cops -- but never did a damn thing for anyone including themselves.

Oh right... 05.Nov.2008 12:39

That's right, I forgot, the people that actually do things for us are the people in power (bush, obama, etc) any who actually fight for themselves is doing nothing, and people who vote are actually making change... right?

Wow... What a delusion you must be suffering from, I can't wait until barak obama show his true power by doing for corporate america just what all the other people in power do, and people like you can finally wake up to the fact that obama is meaningless in the face of real change. At least you celebrated last night, though, you'll always have that to cling to, and what a change you made. Welcome the new boss, same as the old boss!

Hope n Dreams and Used Car Salesmen 05.Nov.2008 15:09

Ben Waiting

its like a couple that are buying their first (used) car together
they shop
they look
they dream
they imagine
they hope together
they look over all the options
they get the 'sales pitch' from the car seller, it sounds sooooooo good!

so then they get their 'dream' and buy their car.... the happy days are in the air
but they soon find out
...the car is not what they "hoped for'
nor is it the "dream" they had, in fact its almost seems they were "ripped off"

it seemed like it was going to be so good and so right...
it was suppose to be their "dream"
but they got a run of the mill / lemon ... they were sold out and used and their dreams were destroyed by the very people they placed their hop with ..."the salesman"

their car they bought for their "change for better transportation" that was going to be their "hope and their wheels for the future"
... was not as it now turns out what they were told it would be

did they know it was coming?
no ...they were so ecstatic about their dream car
and they couldn't imagine it would be any different than in their dream, and from what they were "told" it would be

they were warned by others ...but they couldn't let their dream die ....until it was too late
I was happy for their idea and ambitions when i seen them looking and 'comparing'
I was proud for their desires to invest so much "together" for a decent ride

but I shook my head when I seen them go to the "same old car shop"

the only consolation is "now they know better!"
the tragedy is that in this case, here (now)today... is this is not just a dream about a car ....

it is sad to see the rip off, transpiring... when we already know the lemon has been bought from the same used car salesman as time and time before

the dream sounded so cozy and righteous
oh well

Don't shoot messenger 06.Nov.2008 09:22

Martha Perez

Hey folks, don't shoot the messenger. I was just reporting on what I observed taking place that night, although I too was happy about Obama being elected (granted, I agree that waging a war for peace is insane). However one feels about Obama being elected is one thing; try telling that to the hundreds that were out on the streets. I think more activists should have been out there, trying to recruit some of them for the cause. I didn't see that. Was I being re-miss?
