KBOO Community Radio is in the midst of the Fall Membership Drive, in which the station uses the airwaves and internet to reach out to listeners and supporters for financial support. Typically, KBOO receives over 80% of it's support from listeners. This year, the station will not be receiving any support from the federal government's Corporation for Public Broadcasting, so the percentage of membership dollars going towards the operating budget will increase significantly.
As a community radio station, KBOO is committed to provided alternative perspectives and diverse voices that are neglected in traditional and mainstream media sources. KBOO also provides access to media and training for anyone in the community. The station's programming strives to be representative of the diverse communities of Portland. KBOO is celebrating 40 years of community radio, and is one of the oldest community radio stations in the country.
In the spirit of serving the community, the station has been conducting surveys and community meetings with the goal of revitalizing weekday programming to better reflect community needs. In addition, KBOO is responding to listener feedback and has reduced the number of days for the on-air Fall Membership Drive.
To highlight the diverse programming that KBOO offers throughout the year, the station will broadcast a variety of program specials, including in-depth public affairs and news, as well as unique and rare music gems.
