EUGENE, OR - The Lane County Coalition Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) are hosting a rally and a march on Sunday, June 29th from the EMU on the University of Oregon Campus. They intend to draw awareness to the impact of the Olympics on the poor and homeless communities locally and globally. The Lane County SDS consists of members of Lane Community College SDS, the University of Oregon SDS, as well as other students from across the county.
"We have learned of increased ticketing and destruction of homeless camps through our relationships with the homeless community and a network of social service workers and volunteers with groups including the HIV Alliance, Food Not Bombs, White Bird, and Food for Lane County ", said UO transfer student Leif Brecke.
Communities across the world have utilized the decision to have the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in China as means of drawing attention to the Human Rights violations in China. "The people of China have been denied basic freedom of speech, religious freedom, and basic worker rights. In addition, China has taken a heavy hand in its occupation of Tibet", said UO transfer student Cody Anderson.
SDS is an education and social action organization dedicated to increasing democracy in all phases of our common life. They promote the active participation of young people in the formation of a movement to build a society free from poverty, ignorance, war, exploitation, racism and sexism.
