Action Alert - Portland Forest Service Recreation Resource Advisory Committee Meeting
This Thursday and Friday, June 26th and 27th, there will be a meeting of the Pacific Northwest Recreation Resource Advisory Committee at the Red Lion Hotel - Portland Convention Center. It is vital that someone be physically present to representative the public!
The RRAC is, in theory, representative of the interests of the outdoor recreating public -- but the RRAC is hand picked by the Forest Service and is likely to go along with whatever the agency proposes. The RRAC is authorized to give its endorsement of fee increases and new recreation fees ONLY when "general public support for the recommendation is documented". To read the law on this important point see Section 4(d) of FLREA http://www.wildwilderness.org/docs/therat.htm
According to the meeting agenda and supplimental materials, the Forest Service will propose approximately 200 new and increased fees for recreation sites within Oregon and Washington. These proposals will be put on the table for discussion and approval. Chances are high that the RRAC will give its stamp of approval for most (if not all) of those increases even though it is unlikely that anyone will produce adequate evidence of "general public support".
It is imperative that one or more members of the public attend this meeting and remind the RRAC of their legal obligation not to approve the Forest Service's recommendation unless it provides documented GENERAL PUBLIC SUPPORT. It is likewise imperative that one or more members of the public review any evidence of support that is presented. Anecdotal or limited public support is not adequate.
I am sending this message primarily to members of the public in and around the Portland area. My hope is that one or more of you will attend and will speak during the public comment period.
