Benefit Dinner for Burma's Monks

The Burma Action Committee is a local activist group that works to raise awareness of and support for the Burmese freedom movement. On Sunday, February 24th, the Committee will be hosting a fundraising dinner to raise money for the Arakan Library in Bangladesh.
Six months ago, monks in Burma peacefully marched in the streets demanding change from
the Burmese military junta. The junta soon began violently cracking down, and thousands of
Buddhist monks have been forced to flee in search of safety. Burmese monks arriving in
Dhaka, Bangladesh, to seek asylum with the UNHCR have found themselves homeless and
at risk. The Arakan Library is a joint project of Burmese democracy and media groups in
Dhaka aiming to provide shelter for the monks seeking refuge, as well as a free library for the
Burmese refugee community. Proceeds from the dinner will go towards finding and renting a
space for the Arakan Library.
