Blumenauer Speech Draws Protest to Bus Project Conference

Reboot Democracy: control, alt, IMPEACH
On Friday, January 11 at 1:30 PM Individuals for Justice, Veterans for Peace and other groups will join in a protest calling for Impeachment of Bush and Cheney Montgomery Park, 2701 NW Vaughn St in Portland and are calling on all progressives in Portland to join them.

The protest is directed at Representative Earl Blumenauer who has refused to join in calling for articles of impeachment against George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Blumenauer will present the keynote speech at the Rebooting Democracy Conference sponsored by the Bus Project.

Demonstrators called upon the Bus Project to find a speaker who is more supportive of holding Bush and Cheney accountable for numerous violations of the U.S. laws and the. When the Bus Project chose not to replace Blumenauer, protestors decided to demonstrate at the conference.

Many of those demonstrating are veterans of the U.S. Military. Joe Walsh, who is also known as the Love Vet, is one of the Friday protest organizers. He also initiated weekly protests in front of Blumenauer's office that are now in their 23rd week. Walsh and two others were arrested for impeding access to Blumenauer's office building on December 20. Walsh is frustrated that Blumenauer continues to ignore the majority of his constituents who support impeachment. His motivation for the protest is simple: "Earl Blumenauer is my voice in the House of Representatives and refuses to stop, in any meaningful way, the corruption that is now called the Bush Administration. Impeachment hearings must start now, today and not tomorrow. I will protest everywhere Rep. Blumenauer goes until President Bush and Vice President Cheney are out of office or Blumenauer calls for impeachment." Joe Walsh's full statement is attached.

Veterans for Peace are also central to the Friday protest and will have members from Portland and Eugene in attendance. Grant Remmington, of the Portland Chapter of Veterans for Peace, says he is disgusted with the failure of elected representatives to stop the war and to impeach Bush and Cheney who have violated their oaths of office. He says, "Double standards don't cut it with those of us who put our lives on the line while wearing the uniform of the United States. When we joined the Armed Forces we raised our right hand and took an oath that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. If we violated that oath we would face Court Martial and prison. The President and Vice President have violated their oath of office and those who have the responsibility to hold them accountable have refused to do so. By not doing so, they have also violated their oath of office to "...support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic;"

BLOOD ON HIS HANDS 09.Jan.2008 11:01

Lone Vet lonevet2008@comcast.net

Rep. Blumenauer is not a progressive democrat; he is in league with the Democratic Leadership Council, (DLC) with the likes of Pelosi, Hoyer, Emanuel, and Hillary Clinton. He will vote for the continuation of this war whenever the vote is close, the only time he will cast a vote against funding is when the margin of passage is so wide he can cast what I call a throw away vote. We have the ability to see through this when Sen. Smith does it but for some reason many cannot see this when it comes to Blumenauer.

HE HAS BLOOD ON HIS HANDS

Blumenauer will not hold Cheney/bush accountable and he must be challenged in every way. We must muster up the energy to bring to light who this man represents, he supports the status quo and must be defeated in 2010. Someone must run as an independent against him now to get his/her name out there for the 2010 election. We have 3 years to build an opposition to this man I call the "Earl-Man."

Anniversary of Shame

The 6 year anniversary of the place called Gitmo falls on January 11th. We will wear orange armbands, and I will wear red gloves to remind the "DLC-er" of the blood on his hands. Our demonstration is about impeachment but we will also express our disgust with Blumenauer's silence on this place of horrors. Those responsible for this place must be brought before the Bar of Justice.

Come, join us, and let Blumenauer know wherever he goes he will see a red shirt with the word IMPEACH on it and know we are pissed.

For Justice and Peace,
Joe Walsh---Lone Vet

I appreciate the focus of the protest 09.Jan.2008 11:57

And also that organizers go out of their way to honor other activists... even conference participants.

Last month, three House judiciary committee members went public with a call to proceed with impeachment hearings. More at: www.wexlerwantshearings.com (Steve Novick has also endorsed this call: www.votehook.com/join_call_cheney_impeachment_hearings)

Earl could have turned this demonstration into a celebration by joining the same call. There would also be no further need to protest his office every week either (Thursdays, noon to 2pm. 729 NE Oregon St. PDX).

Why won't Earl do his duty?

THE CIRCUS IS - LETTING BUSH & CHENEY RUIN AMERICA 09.Jan.2008 13:20

Joe Anybody iam@joe-anybody.com

Earl says it will be a "Circus to Impeach Bush& Cheney"

Well Let the Circus Begin

Rebooting Democracy .... how about with a SUPER BIG "IMPEACHMENT HEARING"

Now that would be real "rebooting"

I will be there in SOLIDARITY to encourage Peace, Justice, and HONEST LEADERSHIP by .....

"Protesting Earl Blumenauer lack of courage and respect for the constitution and his constituents"

It Seems 09.Jan.2008 14:00

Jim Lockhart jglockhart@comcast.nt

That Corporations put profits before people, and politicians put politics before people. This, in a constitutionally mandated Democracy, for, of and by the People, is criminal, is actually Treason.

It Seems obvious that this situation is untenable for the People, and efforts to promote awareness of this situation is not only our necessary duty, but a heroic action as well.

And, it seems that those who do the bidding of the Corporate "velvet fascism," no matter their favorable positions on comparatively minor issues, do not deserve either praise or position.

A Circus is an artificial arena, which pretends to reflect Natural conditions in order to entertain, exhilerate and sometimes frighten the audience. Sounds like all three current branches of government to me. Nothing is truly as it is portrayed, and if Impeachment were on the table, at least these corporate lackey's would be attempting to exercise the obvious will of the people.

His constituents need to put this same kind of pressure on "do nothing" David Wu.

Wu too 09.Jan.2008 17:19

Mr Yep

yep they do
..but Impeachment starts in the House of Representatives ... is the way I understand this

David Wu _is_ a member of the House and (supposedly) represents Oregon's first congressional district*.

 http://www.house.gov/wu/

There is no reason why an equal amount of pressure should not be applied to him as well as Sir Earl. Pound on him. My letters to him only yield milk-toast, vague, non-committal, bull-shit letters in return. He and Sir Earl are of the same ilk...hand-maiden Yes-men to Nancy Pelosi.

* Oregon's First Congressional District includes five counties in Northwest Oregon following the Columbia River from downtown Portland to the Pacific Ocean and Oregon's scenic north coast.
