HELENA, MT - Since we, as humans, long for a resurrection of things that have been or are being lost, nostalgia remains a hollow term with diminished returns. In his new book, Nostalgia, Naturally: A collection of poems (published by AuthorHouse), Tyler C. Pedersen draws on his professional experience with and personal passion for ecology to suggest that the desire for simplicity has a didactic purpose transcending the very fabric of our society.
"Nostalgia helps remind us of what we still have in the now and encourages us to cherish those entities that are easily taken for granted," Pedersen writes. "If we are to confront the world's problems and become part of the solution, we must do so in a spirit of the moment, out of a love for listening and the goodness of hope and humanity."
Nostalgia, Naturally finds nourishment in Mother Nature with 50 poems and 28 black and white photographs that capture the childlike wonder of puddle jumping through memories. Topics include spiders, butterflies, bees, ants, birds, moose, squirrels, trees, streams, rain, sun, catching cold, sleeping, winter, death, and artists. Consider this passage from "For want of a corner":
Whoever did notice/ An invisible thread/ Escaping time in the attic/ A cobweb/ Aging with dust, mildew and rot/ Sticking to faces long since forgot/ For when houses collapse/ And our presence fades/ No one that owns/ Nothing to save/ Yet for want of a corner/ I'll bet you will find/ A cluster of silk/ That's just been refined.
The calm pseudo-naivety of previous poems is broken in the recoiling ripples of Pedersen's critique of so-called progress. These poems reflect on the necessity of promoting the mutual well being of humans and the environment, while emphasizing "how humankind has reverted to humunkind."
Tyler C. Pedersen lives in Portland, OR. He graduated from the University of Montana in 2006 with a bachelor's degree in ecology and a minor in art history and criticism. Many of these poems were inspired by photographs taken in the wilderness surrounding his home at the base of the Continental Divide.
