Marcus Borg has always irritated and angered religious fundamentalists and right wing politcos. But his new book, to be released in early November, is likely to infuriate them. Borg, along with his colleage, John Dominic Crossan, have already given clues as to where they are going with this. Crossan has already stated in lectures and in his latest book that Christianity and Empire are diametrically in opposition to one another by their very natures. The Christmas Story is subversive because the Roman Emperor, Augustus, was also said to be born of a Virgin, and was called the Son of God. Those who insist upon a literal interpretation of the virginity of Mary miss the point. It is all about saying, "Augustus is not King. Jesus is King." The people who heard and told the Christmas Story in the First Century were well aware of this. The implications for the neocons' vision of American Empire are obvious.
Marcus Borg will talk about his new book at the Courtyard Marriott, 9300 SE 93rd, in Clackamas on Sunday, November 11 from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM. His new book will be on sale and he will be available to autograph them. This event is sponsored by Micah's Village, a spiritual home for progressives ( http://www.micahsvillage.org).
