A few hours ago, a Portland bicyclist was killed in a collision with a cement truck.
This is heartbreaking. Only a few weeks ago in Seattle a large vehicle made a right turn across a bike lane into the path of a bicyclist - a scenario very similar to what happened today. In Portland, just as here in Seattle, it seems the bicyclist is already being blamed.
The police officer on the scene, Lt. Kruger, is quoted saying: "The truck was headed northbound on SW 14th Ave. and it came to a stop at a red light on W. Burnside. When the truck's light turned green, the truck began to turn right (eastbound) onto W. Burnside. At that point, somehow a bicycle collided with the truck."
This is just one voice, our collective voice needs to be louder. We all need to speak up to defend the bicyclist, to send words of encouragement to her family and friends, and we must keep working together to make the streets safer for everybody.
