The march started by the radio and television station that was taken over last August 1st.There were women dressed as news reporters who were very enthused the whole march, smiling, laughing, hopping up and down.1,000s of women, a band, and supportive men all marched together to the zocalo.
The crowd poured into the zocalo, hanging up banners, women speakers, the crowd cheering back. I didnīt catch the names of all the speakers, but there was someone from Mujer Nueva (feminist organization), a compaņera from Atenco, and the wife of Flavio Sosa among others. They were all really impassioned speakers. The compaņera from Atenco presented a machete and hankerchief for Oaxaca. The Oaxacan women gave an APPO shirt and a cooking pan..Symbolizing their solidarity. The chanted ĄAtenco, hermano, Oaxaca te da la mano!(Atenco, brother/sibling, Oaxaca is giving you a hand!)
Some of their message was..
We need to organize, no one else is going to organize in the struggle for us. This is the struggle of all Mexico and all valiant women and men.
The families, the kids, the pueblo are suffering. As the poor class we are going to be more strong be cause we will see more suffering. We have the courage and we demand the release of all the political prisoners.
The struggle is against the state, a struggle of consciousness, of thinking, of building.
We demand the punishment of Ulises Ruiz.
And that with all the fear that exists we still have to leave our houses, go out into the streets and make our demands!!
