Lents Residents: Foster Feed & Garden Selling Sick Kittens

Heard rumors this place was selling animals, and sure enough they were...
The worst, however, were 3 sick kittens in the larger area of the store. They didn't even look 8 weeks old and they looked like they had Upper Respiratory Infections (URI). They were also thin. The woman behind the counter claimed ignorance, stating the owner took them in yesterday. She would not elaborate on if they even screened buyers or if they were vaccinated. She claimed she worried about "important things, like children going hungry". (On a side note, I've never understood why caring for animals and people have to be mutually exclusive??)

Please go in or call and ask the store to please stop selling animals, especially kittens. By the statistics I could dig up from last year, probably around 5-6,000 cats were killed in Portland Metro area shelters. Who knows how many were killed by private individuals, or simply starved to death after being abandoned. If the owner really wants to offer kittens at his store, there are many area shelters and rescues that would be glad to come with their healthy, vaccinated, and fixed kittens and cats to his store and offer them for adoption.

Here is their information:

gotmystoryright

So you say the kittens in question "didn't look to be 8 weeks old & looked like they had upper respiratory infection". Are you a licensed veterinarian? Are you qualified to make statements like that? I worked in a pet store for many years & from my actual experiences, I can tell you that people drop off pets at places like pet stores & feed stores all the time. My vet's office is targeted frequently with abandoned & ill pets, left tied to the fence or boxed up with tape. I think you need to stop being a vigilante & investigate things more thoroughly. I have purchased pets at Foster Feed & Gardens many times over the years & have never had a sick pet from them. They are caring & responsible. You don't know the whole story & must have talked to an employee not familiar with the kittens. I can tell you that you failed to mention that for a feed store, they are very clean. I go in there frequently & find that the animals are well cared for, have plenty of fresh water & food, & their litter boxes & cages are always clean. Actually, when you go in, you smell feed & fertilizer, not animal smells at all.
You sited statistics about animal deaths in the Portland Metro area as well. You should consider that these kittens have a chance to find a home & won't be euthanized at a shelter. Shelters don't show up with pets to fill stores.
In the future, it would be wise to get your information correct before you go off posting on websites with incorrect information. No wonder you didn't sign your real name.

lady behind the counter

In response to the comment re: kittens at foster feed. I am the lady that was behind the counter that day, and yes I did say I cared about things like hungry children, but it was in defense the woman who saw the kittens didn't ask me what was going on with them she just walked up put some items on the counter smiled a not so friendly smile at me and then announced that I just lost a sale because we were selling sick kittens! It is true that I didn't know what was going on with them but found out later that the kittens had been left in a box on our dock. That happens frequently, then we take them in vaccinate them, worm them and put flea treatment on them when they get old enough and strong enough . We have many regular customers who have gotten their cherished and loved family pets from us. I also have pets and love them very much! There was no meaningful dialog that day between me and the young woman who was upset by the condition of the kittens, just a lot of emotion. I was upset that she just assumed we didn't care for our animals when that is the farthest thing from the truth. I understand that there is a gross overpopulation of cats. We rent humane traps so people can trap feral cats in their neighborhoods and I give people info on the feral cat coalition and animal aid for low cost spay and neutering, almost daily. I feel that Foster Feed is getting a bad rep for no reason. People should come and see for themselves. We even have a new kitty house that is two stories with toys and cubby holes and the fattest happiest kittens you'd ever want to see!

It is important to do through and diligent research before slandering a company or individual. It appears that this article lacks that due diligence. Please consider honoring your self, your community and your writing by following up on theories with an open mind to find the truth. My family has gotten superior guidance and loving pets from Foster Feed for three years. We will continue to support then and be grateful for their loving treatment of animals.
