BILL O'REILLY SUPPORTS VERMONT INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENT
In a surprising turn of events, conservative Fox News talk show host Bill O'Reilly announced his support for the Second Vermont Republic, Vermont's independence movement, on his nationally televised show, The O'Reilly Factor, on Tuesday evening June 5th.
In an interview with SVR founder Thomas H. Naylor, O'Reilly said "How can we help you? I want to help you secede." Naylor responded, "You already have by having me as a guest on your show." O'Reilly followed up with, "Can we raise some money for you?" Naylor said, "Yes, we need all the help we can get."
Naylor's appearance on The O'Reilly Factor was his third interview on Fox News in thirty six hours. On June 4th he appeared on the early morning show Fox and Friends. Later that afternoon he was interviewed by Douglas Kennedy for The Big Story. This piece included footage from SVR's state convention held in October 2005 in the State House in Montpelier and pastoral scenes of rural Vermont.
All of the media attention focused on SVR was precipitated by an Associated Press news release by Montpelier Bureau Chief John Curran entitled "In Vermont, Nascent Secession Movement Gains Traction."
The June 3rd release was run by hundreds of newspapers, websites, radio stations, and TV stations worldwide. CBSNews.com even created its own Second Vermont Republic miniwebsite. The AP piece reported on the results of a recent UVM Center for Rural Studies poll which found that "13 percent of those surveyed support secession, up from 8 percent a year before."
With nearly 64,000 eligible voters in Vermont supporting secession, SVR is arguably the largest secession movement in America. Over half of the 50 states now have active secession movements.
Throughout the week Vermont independence spokespersons were interviewed by CNN, BBC Radio, and a dozen or so radio stations across the country.
Japan's FUJI TV and Brazil's TV GLOBO, the fourth largest television network in the world, are sending camera crews to Vermont.
TV GLOBO will cover Vermont's Fourth of July independence movement activities.
